Metro Station of the Month: Assemblee Nationale 2

I photographed the Assemblee Nationale metro in 2007 but recently the station had a makeover and I thought I would post new photos.

The Assemblee Nationale is similar to the Congress in the U.S. On the platform are posters with bold graphics of some of the ideas and values the French Constitution conveys. A few panels contain copy about how the Assemblee Nationale was started after the revolution and its mission.

Abstract Metro Photos

You never know when and where artistic inspiration will strike.

I’ve always had a fascination with the colored seats of the metro and photographed them before but there was always something missing from the photos, either the lighting was poor or the reflection of the fluorescent light marred the color.

While waiting for the metro last month, I looked at the metro seats in a different way and photographed them more abstractly just focusing on the top of the seat against the background poster. After, I started to notice the posters in some of the metro stations had either mustard or avocado colored ceramic frames around them and I started to photograph the just the edges and got some very interesting results.

I would love to get your feedback on my newest photo obsession and if you would like to see more in the future.

My Paris Apartment for Rent
I am renting my fabulous Paris apartment in the heart of the Marais near St. Paul metro, from November 30 to December 16, a total of 17 nights. It's a spacious one-bedroom 750 sq. ft. loft style apartment with 12 ft. ceilings, decorated in chic Mid-Century Modern furniture and sleeps two people in a Queen size bed. Amenities include washer/dryer, 16" flat screen TV, dishwasher, internet connection/Wifi and free long distance calls to the U.S.  The apartment is located on the second floor with a large elevator.

The price is 2800 euros/165 per night for 17 nights, 1500 euros for 7 nights, and anything in between 7 & 15 nights, 175 euros per night. Minimum rental 7 nights or 1500 euros. Photos upon request.

Metro Station of the Month: Reaumur-Sebastopol-1

After photographing the Louvre-Rivoli Metro station a few weeks ago, it opened up a whole new world of Metro stations under construction.

While switching trains at the Reaumur-Sebastopol station I discovered an subterranean art trove. In this instance it was more like an archeological dig but instead of ancient caves having hieroglyphics, it was rough cement walls spray-painted with fresh graffiti in Day-Glo colors.

This is a two part series, so look for more photos tomorrow. I included some human figures in the series tomorrow, so curious what you think of them.

Metro Station of the Month: Louvre-Rivoli

I always thought the Louvre-Rivoli metro station was so cool with the fabulous fake treasures of the Louvre lining the platforms. I attempted to photograph it many times but the lighting was too dim. A few months ago they stripped the station bare to renovate it and the platforms now look like an art installation, somewhere between an archeological dig and Robert Rauschenberg paintings with remnants of phrases from old posters and splotches of bright paint on the dirty white tile.

I am curious what you think of my more abstract photos, a direction I’ve found myself very drawn to in the last year or so.

I’m taking a blogging break/petit vacances this week. I am reposting one of my first monthly series: Metro Station of the Month. I stopped running the series a few years ago because I ran out of metro stations, so they may be familiar to some of my longtime readers and new to my more recent readers.

Abbesses metro is the station for Montmartre. It has one of the only two remaining original Hector Guimard metro entrances in Paris and was named after abbesses of the nearby Dames-de Montmartre Abbey. One of the deepest stations in Paris,118 ft., I schlepped up up the numerous, windy stairs to photograph the wonderful,whimsical murals of the area painted on the walls behind the railing.

I’m taking a blogging break/petit vacances this week. I am reposting one of my first monthly series: Metro Station of the Month. I stopped running the series a few years ago because I ran out of metro stations, so they may be familiar to some of my longtime readers and new to my more recent readers.

I haven't done a Metro Station of the Month in ages, and I read somewhere that the Liége metro station had some interesting mosaic tiles.

The station was originally called Berlin, after the city, and opened in 1911. It closed in August, 1914 at the beginning of WW I and reopened in December, 1914 and renamed Liége, after the Belgian city, paying homage to the Belgium resistance during the Battle of Liége.

The station closed again during WW II and didn't reopen again till 1968. In 1982 the station was refurbished and the Belgian government donated ceramic tiles depicting various locations of Liége.

I’m taking a blogging break/petit vacances this week. I am reposting one of my first monthly series: Metro Station of the Month. I stopped running the series a few years ago because I ran out of metro stations, so they may be familiar to some of my longtime readers and new to my more recent readers.

I totally forgot to feature one of the most beautiful and unique metro stations: Palais Royal. Sculptor Jean-Michel Othoniel redesigned the entrance, in front of Place Colette in the year 2000. Othoniel is known for working with glass beads and he created two cupolas, “Kiosque des noctambules”, which represent day and night. I love the way the beads are threaded, with the ruby red, lavender, yellow, royal and aqua blue ones alternating with the brushed aluminum and clear glass ones. The surrounding gate that supports the beads is an intricate design of interconnected brushed aluminum circles, with more glass colored beads interspersed.

I had the pleasure of meeting John Michel and having dinner with him last year and he was genial and very charming. The station was re-named Palais Royal/Musee de Louvre since 1989, when the entrance to the Louvre was moved from the original location, the Louvre-Rivoli stop. I’m taking a blogging break/petit vacances this week. I am reposting one of my first monthly series: Metro Station of the Month. I stopped running the series a few years ago because I ran out of metro stations, so they may be familiar to some of my longtime readers and new to my more recent readers.

I have made many attempts to photograph the Arts et Métiers metro station and have finally succeeded in capturing the dark copper walls and the dark underwater like atmosphere. I love the porthole windows with the various sculptures.The station has always been a favorite of mine and it was newly designed in 1994 by Belgian comics artist Francois Schuiten inspired by the works of Jules Verne.

Metro Station of the Month: Parque in Lisbon

I was inspired by Marianne Strom’s metro stations and decided to post about some metro stations in Lisbon.

Many of the metro stations were elaborately tiled with Lisbon’s famous tile. Francois Schein, who also designed the Concorde metro in Paris, designed the Parque metro station. She used 450,000 authentic azulejos tiles, which spell out quotations from Plato, Lao-Tse, and Gilles Deleuze. It was built in 1994 and represents 50 maps of the discoveries made by Portuguese explorers in the 14th and 15th century including Vasco de Gama.

When I took the metro back to the airport, I surprised with the most delightful wall panels of black and white caricatures of famous Portuguese artists, writers, musicians, and entertainers.
