Door(s) of the Month May 2021: Luberon in Provence

Last week I made another trip to the Luberon to stay in my friend’s house in Puyvert, a tiny town just next to Lourmarin. We did a few side trips to the various villages in the area including Ansouis, Mirabeau, Bonnieux, and La Tour dAigues, and I captured some great doors. Which do you like best?

Door of the Month March 2021: Narrow Doors of Montmartre

A few weeks ago while doing research for my Facebook Live tour of Montmartre, I discovered some cool narrow doors which are unusual and I thought I would share them with you. Do you like them and should I continue searching for more of them?

Door(s) of the Month February 2021- A Potpourri

I first want  to thank everyone who watched my Live In the Footsteps of Arsene Lupin Facebook tour for France.fr. It was a big success with over 700 people watching it live, and over 12K views of the video along with 664 comments. Door(s) of the Month: December 2020-Rue du Pre aux Clercs, 75007

Rue du Pre aux Clercs is a quiet side street off of Blvd. Saint Germain in the 7^th arrondissement. It’s a one block street, beginning at rue Saint Guillaume and ending at rue de l’Université. 

The street was named is after a field where duels originally took place and before that it was occupied by the abbey of Saint Germain which was connected to the church. 

Door(s) of the Month: Ile de Ré

When I was in Ile de Re´ in mid-September, I took a walk in the late afternoon and discovered lots of wonderful doors. The late day light was casting a golden hue, saturating the colors and details of the doors. Many of the doors were bordered with late summer flowers and vines.

Door(s) of the Month: Boulevard Saint Germain

After I shot my A Bite of Paris video with John Baxter in July, I walked home on the Boulevard Saint Germain, starting from Place Odeon, walking east and ending in the Latin Quarter. I passed a number of rich colored doors in jelly apple red, emerald green, electric blue, mint green, and pretty pink. The bright sun that day shone brilliantly, accentuating the already saturated door colors.

Door(s) of the Month: Rue de Varenne

After my visit to the Rodin Museum a few weeks ago, I walked on the rue de Varenne toward rue du Bac. Along the street are numerous former palaces built in the 1700s, that are now government buildings and foreign embassies. The massive doors are spectacular. I visited the Italian Embassy in 2009 at rue de Varenne and wrote about it on Eye Prefer Paris.

Door(s) of the Month-Gerberoy

I was overwhelmed by the beautiful doors in Gerberoy, especially the ones that had an abundance of vines and flowers in front of them. Do you have some favorites here?

Doors of the Month: Place Des Vosges

I recently realized that I have never featured a door from the Place des Vosges, so today I am presenting a variety of doors from the historic square. 

A few facts about the Place des Vosges

1. It was the first public square of Paris, constructed from 1605 to 1612. It was commissioned by King Henri IV, who also commissioned the construction of the Ile Saint Louis. 

2. Victor Hugo lived on the south east corner of the square and partly wrote Les Miserables living there. Today it’s a museum with free admission. 

3. It was originally named Place Royal, but the reason why it’s called Place des Vosges, is because in 1699 the city was running out of money and they sent an incentive out to the 95 departments of France, and which ever department paid its taxes first, would have a square named after it. The Vosges region in eastern France, near the German border, paid its taxes first, so that’s why it’s called Place des Vosges. 

4. The park in the middle is named after King Louis 13^th, who married princess Anne of Austria, in 1613, just after the square was inaugurated. 

5. Other notable people that lived on the square include Madame Sevigne, Jack Lang, the former minister of culture in France, and Cardinal Richelieu. The most notorious former resident was Dominique Strauss Kahn. Kahn was groomed to be the president in the 2011 French election, until he was detained in New York City for allegedly raping a chambermaid at the hotel he was staying in. He was later exonerated but faced more sexual abuse charges when he returned to France from former victims who spoke out. Kahn was later brought up on charges of running a prostitution ring in Lille but was again exonerated on the charges. Harvey Weinstein hired Kahn’s lawyer when he was brought on sexual abuse and rape charges, but eventually fired him.
