Doors of the Month, November 2024 -Vincennes

Vincennes is a suburb of Paris east of the city, at the end of the # 1 Metro line. It’s best known for the Chateau de Vincennes, a former fortress and chateau built in the mid-1300s, and the Bois Vincennes, the largest park in Paris.

I have never spent much time in Vincennes except to go to the chateau on a few occasions. Last summer, I spent in afternoon in Vincennes, a quiet and primarily residential neighborhood. There’s are many Art Nouveau and arts and crafts houses and building form the early 1900s.

Along the way I discovered a bevy of great doors.

Doors of the Month, September 2024: Deal, Kent

One of the highlights of my trip to Deal, Kent to visit our friends earlier this month (CLICK HERE to read if you missed it) was the sensational doors. So many doors, too little time!

Not only were the doors painted pale, pastel, and vibrant colors, but they also often had either contrasting or matching color shutters or door frames. Many had hanging flowerpots or window boxes.

Doors of the Month- Montmartre/Rue Custine

Last month I gave a Montmartre tour, and it was such a nice day outside, I decided to do some exploring. The rue Caulaincourt, walking north becomes rue Custine, and as I walked down this charming street, I discovered a new set of the doors I haven’t photographed before.

Doors of the Month: Chefchaouen

Last month I wrote about our trip to Chefchaouen, Morocco (CLICK HERE to read), a small city where all the buildings in the old quarter are painted blue. I captured many of the terrific blue doors in Chefchaouen and I am sharing them today. Do you have some favorites?

I recently made a quick trip to Barcelona for four days and discovered a plethora of great doors.

Doors of the Month, November 2023: New Orleans

I took a four-day trip to New Orleans earlier this month, and believe it or not, I had never been before.

I went with a friend and the first day we explored and took a wonderful and informative tour of the French Quarter with Frank Perez, who shared its diverse and rich history. Some of the highlights were the William Faulkner bookshop and the house where Tennessee Williams wrote A Streetcar Named Desire. The rest of the time we roamed the streets of the Bywater and Marigny, admiring the quirky cottage houses, and the Garden District with its historical mansions. We also ate well, tasting all the local foods including muffuletta, gumbo, and Po’boys. One night we went to Frenchmen Street, lined with the top blues and jazz clubs in New Orleans, and saw blues legend Little Freddie King at the DBA club.

I loved the colorful doors, stairways, and porches of the New Orleans houses with seasonal decorations for fall and Thanksgiving and some were already decorated for Christmas.

Doors of the Month, August 2023: Brussels

I took a quick, two-day trip last week to Brussels for an Art Nouveau celebration with exhibitions and events around the city.

In between exhibitions, I discovered a bounty of doors, and today’s series focuses specifically on Art Nouveau doors.

I’ll post more about the sights I saw later.
