Last but not least to complete Courtyard Week 8 is this charming and romantic courtyard just around the corner from me. The door was open to this courtyard, as there were workmen doing some repairs on the building, so I just ambled in and took some photos.

Courtyard Week 8: 22 Rue de Picardie

Last summer I received a photo assignment from France Today Magazine to photograph some shop and gallery owners in the Marais. Galerie Glenat was on the list and when I went to photograph the manager, I peered into an open door leading to a most enchanting courtyard filled with white and pink hydrangea bushes and asked if it was okay to walk through.

This was one of the more unusual courtyards I’ve encountered because it is a shared courtyard of many buildings that extend the whole block and the entrances are mainly from the shops and galleries on the block, not one central door.

Courtyard Week 8: 28 Rue Charlot

After discovering the courtyard at 28 rue Charlot, I stumbled on another one right across the street at number 33.  I have to say I was partial to this courtyard because there’s an awning company called Establishments Richard.

Again, I couldn’t find any historic information about the building and from the architectural characteristics, it looks like it was a hotel particulier from the 1600s. This courtyard is little more industrial than the others this week with little or no greenery but it has a grand marble stairway and some great rustic red doors. Many of the ground floors of the hotel particulier’s in the Marais were converted into factories and workshops in the late 1800s/early 1900s and have now been replaced with art galleries or design ateliers.

Courtyard Week 8: 33 Rue Charlot

I know many of you have been suffering through one of the coldest and snowiest winters the U.S. has ever recorded, so to give you a ray of hope and sunshine I present Courtyard Week 8, with photos from last summer when the temperature was in the high 70s Fahrenheit. (Don’t you wish it was like that now?).

I haven’t done a Courtyard Week in almost three years and I decided it was high time to post a new series. In case you are new to the blog, Courtyard Week is a series I started way back in 2009 where I visit/sneak/ cajole my way in/ rush the door when someone opens it into a courtyard and take photos. They have been some of my most fun and sometimes daring moments in Paris and I was even chased out of one once.

The courtyards in series eight were all in the Marais and two were on the same street. Today’s courtyard is on rue Charlot in the northern Marais/NORMA. I especially like this one because of the lush greenery and potted plants plus the lopsided marble stairway with an ornate ironwork banister.

I couldn’t find any historic information about the building but from the architectural characteristics, it looks like it was a hotel particulier from the 1600s. A hip women’s clothing shop, AB33 is one of the store fronts and is next door to the Marche des Enfants Rouges, the oldest food market in Paris.

Courtyard Week 7: 133 Rue Saint Dominique

To wrap up Courtyard Week edition 7, I have an unusual courtyard from the 7th arr., which doesn’t have very many interesting courtyards because most of the buildings were constructed in Haussmann era.

Square Sedillot at 133 rue Saint Domique, is a complex of buildings with a large, open courtyard, which is visible from the street because the gates are made of open ironwork. I couldn’t find any information or history about the buildings or when they were built. My hunch is they were built in the 1920s or 1930s because there looks like there is a Art-Deco influence in them, especially with the entry archway and lanterns. Also the planter in the middle of the courtyard looks Art Deco.

The courtyard is immaculately kept and I also loved the pristine white hydrangeas. These photos were taken with my I-Phone too.

Courtyard Week 7: 21 Rue de Assas

Today’s courtyard was a stroke of sheer luck: no sneaking around, no Courtyard Sprints, no waiting for someone to open a door, and no frustration wondering what’s behind a certain door. The courtyard at the Catholic University is open to the public and anyone can just meander through.

The Catholic University is one of the largest French language classrooms in Paris with an annual attendance of 15,000 students, and 4,500 of them are international students. It comprises 21 organizations: 6 faculties, 4 specialized institutes, 11 graduate schools, and 1 doctoral school with 20 research centers along with the Catholic University of Paris Seminary, which prepares its seminarians for ordination and priesthood.

I took French lessons at The Catholic University two times a week for three months when I first moved here and had an excellent teacher who was born in Brooklyn, out of all places.

The courtyard is a large open plaza ad there were lots of students coming in and out of the surrounding buildings the day I was there. They have benches and chairs all around and students were relaxing, studying, and eating lunch in the courtyard. Some of the buildings have intricate tile and brickwork and there are arched walkways with pretty sea blue and gold mosaic tiled pillars. The other buildings are made of limestone and appear to be from the 1600s.

I sat myself on a bench for a few moments to savor the sun, blue sky, the summer red and pink geraniums, the looming tall trees, and imagined what went on in these hallowed buildings over the centuries.

Courtyard Week 7: 8 Rue Saint Paul

The day I went with my tour clients to discover the courtyard at 26 rue Saintonge must have been my lucky courtyard day. We also stumbled upon a real find in the Marais near my house. A black lacquered door was opening on a 17th century hotel particulier on the rue Saint Paul and I did my Courtyard Sprint, arriving in th nick of time before the door closed. It was enormous and expansive, running almost the length of a city block. My client was a serious travel photographer and we both took tons of shots. There was such a lush variety of plants, tall and short trees, flower beds, wild vines, ivy, and plants. This courtyard goes on the list of my top favorites.

Courtyard Week 7: 26 Rue Saintonge

I haven’t done a Courtyard Week in almost a year and lately I have found some new courtyard worthy locations. I have now perfected my “Courtyard Sprint”: Whenever I see someone opening or coming out of a courtyard door from afar, I madly dash, taking long strides to reach the door before it closes. I then have to quickly calm myself so I don’t look like a lunatic trying to bust into their building and then I pretend that I either live in the building or look like I belong there. I am going to petition the 2016 Olympics to include the category of “Courtyard Sprint” and will compete to win the gold.

A few weeks ago I had a tour client who wanted to see the building at 26 rue Saintonge in the northern Marais, which is where the family from the book and film Sarah’s Key lived before they were deported to the concentration camps. It looked like a typical former hotel particulier (private home or mansion) from the 1600s made of limestone with a large royal blue entrance door.  I later found out it was built in 1626. We stared at the door for a few minutes and presto! Someone opened the door and let us into the courtyard.

It was calm and practically deserted. The vines were growing wildly and there was healthy green ivy still growing but some it had already gone bare I believe because of the dry July and August we have had.  The center plant garden was lush and thriving and the building and courtyard were well maintained.

We stood there not talking for a few minutes soaking in the eerie silence and contemplating the tragic acts that fictionally took place here but also knowing they may have very well have been true in one form or another in the direct vicinity.

Courtyard Week 6

You are probably wondering why the headline for this post doesn't have an address. I am embarrassed to say I don't remember exactly. 

Here's the story. In July I was walking again with some tour clients in the Marais and a man was coming out of a courtyard. I went past the door after he exited and he said "Can I help you". I said I was just looking. He said "This is a private house and you are not supposed to be in here". I apologized and was ready to leave and he said " You can come take a look for a minute, I don't mind". I took my photos quickly and scooted out of there. In my haste I forgot to photograph the address. If my memory serves me correctly (although these days it's kind of a sieve sometimes) it was on the rue Beautrillis, in the Marais right off of the rue Saint Antoine, close to Bastille.

Courtyard Week 6: 17 rue des Tournelles

I have passed this lacquered blue door with wisteria peeking out of it on the rue des Tournelles many times on my Marais tours. I could tell there was something special behind it and my curiosity became stronger every time I passed it. One Sunday morning last May while I was doing a tour, someone was exiting the building and I invited my clients to peer inside the doorway with me. The person exiting graciously asked us if we would like to see the inside. What music to my ears and we explored the small oasis of quiet and greenery. There were some unusual features about this courtyard like the iron wall sculptures and the little mail room with Lettres written on the door. Although it was great to be invited to see the courtyard, the thrill of sneaking in wasn't there.

New! Eye Prefer Paris Cooking Classes
I am happy to announce the launch of Eye Prefer Paris Cooking Classes. Come take an ethnic culinary journey with me and chef and caterer Charlotte Puckette, co-author of the bestseller The Ethnic Paris Cookbook (with Olivia Kiang-Snaije). First we will shop at a Paris green-market for the freshest ingredients and then return to Charlotte's professional kitchen near the Eiffel Tower to cook a three-course lunch. After, we will indulge in the delicious feast we prepared along with hand-selected wines.

Cost: 185 euros per person (about $240)
Time: 9:30AM- 2PM (approximately 4 1/2 hours)
Location: We will meet by a metro station close to the market
Class days: Tuesday,Wednesday, Thursday,Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
