The late, great fashion designer Azzedine Alaia was also a passionate collector of vintage, haute couture garments. Over a six-decade period, he amassed over 20,000 pieces, attaining one of the world's largest collections of haute couture. It started in 1968 when Alaia bought almost the entire contents of Cristobal Balenciaga’s atelier after he closed his business. The vast range of clothing goes from the beginnings of haute couture in the 19th century to the 2000s.
The new exhibition displays 140 pieces from Alaia’s archives and designers include Worth, Jeanne Lanvin, Jean Patou, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Madame Grès, Paul Poiret, Gabrielle Chanel, Madeleine Vionnet, Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior Paul Gaultier, Comme des Garçons, Alexander McQueen, Thierry Mugler, and Yohji Yamamoto.
If you want to see an exhibition of Azzedine Alaia fashions, visit his foundation which has a gallery currently showing Alaia/Gres. Beyond Fashion. CLICK HERE to read my blog post from last month about the exhibition.
