April in Paris 2023 Again- Tuileries

I was in the Tuileries yesterday and I couldn’t resist taking more flower and tree photos. The park was in full bloom, bursting with tulips, cherry blossoms, irises, horse chestnut trees, and white daffodils, which I have never seen before.

Giverny 2023

No matter how many times I visit Giverny, I always find something to photograph I haven’t before. I’ve been there every month it's open, April through October, and it’s always a joy.

I took clients yesterday morning when it was pouring rain in Paris and the forecast for Giverny was 100% rain for the day. I believe in miracles, and low and behold, the rain stopped for the entire few hours we were in Giverny, plus even the sun made an appearance for a nanosecond.

Even though the sky was overcast, the colors of the plants, trees, and flowers were even more brilliant. The tulips took center stage, and the color combinations were just gorgeous.

Elliott Erwitt: A Retrospective

One of the great and most prolific photographers of the 20^th and 21^st century, Elliott Erwitt, is having a major retrospective in Paris. Erwitt was born in Paris in 1928 to Russian-Jewish immigrants, and in 1939, they fled Italy and moved to U.S. in 1939. He got his start in photography when he became an assistant photographer for the U.S. army while he served in France and Germany before being discharged in 1953. In that same period, Erwitt met the iconic photographers Edward Steichen, Robert Capa, and Roy Stryker, who greatly influenced his style. Mostly a freelance, editorial, and commercial photographer, Erwitt, worked for Life, Look, Holiday, and Colliers Magazine. He also photographed major celebrities and politicians including Marilyn Monroe, Charles de Gaulle, Ernesto “Che” Guevara, Jackie Kennedy, and Alfred Hitchcock.

The retrospective, with 215 color and black and white photographs, is divided into various themes and subjects. One of his favorite subjects was dogs, which he photographed as frequently as he could, and are the highlight of the exhibit. Erwitt brought humor to much of his work but most of all he brought humanity.

Although it’s been unusually chilly in Paris this April, with temperatures barely breaking 50 degrees most days, the flowers and trees still bloom in spite of the cold. In the past weeks during my tours, I’ve had the good fortune of encountering divine cherry blossoms, tulips, daffodils, and wisteria all around town. Enjoy!

April 2023 Eye Need To Do’s: Elliott Erwitt, Maurice Bejart, Basquiat X Warhol, and Sarah Bernhardt

Elliott Erwitt: A Retrospective

Maurice Bejart

The prolific choreographer Maurice Bejart had a long-lasting partnership with the Paris Opera Ballet for over 40 years. Three of his greatest ballets, L’Oiseau de Feu, Le Chant du compagnon errant, and Bolero will be performed.

Basquiat X Warhol: Painting Four Hands

One of the most highly anticipated exhibitions this spring, Basquiat X Warhol: Painting Four Hands, is about the collaboration of both artists between 1984 and 1985. They produced 160 paintings and some of them are the biggest canvasses they ever painted. The expansive show has over 300 works including pieces by other artists of the time such as Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer, Kenny Scharf, and Michael Halsband, reflecting the vibrant New York art scene of the 1980s.

Sarah Bernhardt: The Woman Who Created the Star

The Divine Sarah aka Sarah Bernhardt was one of the first superstar actresses, whose long career spanned from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. A legend of her time, she acted in some of the greatest plays by playwrights Racine, Shakespeare, Edmond Rostand, and Alexandre Dumas. The exhibition displays over 400 works and includes paintings, photos, artifacts, costumes, posters from her performances, and other memorabilia. Fun fact: Sarah Bernhardt was also a painter, and some of her paintings are displayed in the exhibition.
