Before I get to today's post, I want to thank everyone so much who sent me such warm emails and Facebook comments about my 45th anniversary with Vincent post last Saturday. I received close to 100 emails and I was deeply touched by your kind words but unfortunately I didn't have the time to reply to each one. CLICK HERE if you missed it.
Alber Elbaz, was a multi-talented fashion designer who designed for some of the top fashion houses in Paris and the U.S. including Geoffrey Beene, Guy Laroche, Yves Saint Lauren, and at Lanvin, he was also the creative director for 14 years. In early 2021, Elbaz, suddenly and tragically died of Covid-19 at the age of 59, sending shock waves to the international fashion community. Besides his incredible talent, Elbaz was one of the most beloved designers in the fashion world, a pillar of generosity, warmth, kindness, humor, and charm.
Elbaz was born in Casablanca, Morocco to Jewish parents, but the family moved to Israel when he was an infant. Drawing dresses starting at eight-years old, Elbaz had a natural talent and flair for fashion design, and when he was 23, he left Israel, with $800 in his pocket, to follow his dream to be a fashion designer in the Big Apple. After practically stalking Geoffrey Beene, he got an appointment to meet the legendary, American designer, who hired him almost immediately. After leaving Lanvin in 2015, he delved into other artistic projects including directing and writing a film with Natalie Portman, in which he also designed the costumes, designing bags and shoes for the Tods fashion brand from Italy, and designed lines for Sportsac and Converse. Finally, in 2019, Elbaz created his own fashion brand, AZfashion, dedicated to "developing solutions for women of our times." Bittersweetly, Elbaz did not live long enough to see his brand fully realized.
Last year, in a move to honor his contribution to fashion and to pay homage to his beautiful soul, 46 designers each designed a garment dedicated to Elbaz and staged a runway show. The Alber Elbaz- Love Brings Love exhibition at the Palais Galliera, the official fashion museum of Paris, beautifully displays the 46 garments. Walking through the exhibit, each garment had a plaque with a paragraph by the designer, stating their impression of Elbaz, and I was very moved by the touching things they said and the outpouring of love. The title, Love Brings Love, is derived from a mantra Elbaz stated many times in his life, and it perfectly befits the exhibition. Please note Elbaz's image is on some of the garments.
