I originally saw the Thierry Mugler Couturissime show in Rotterdam in December of 2019, and it was a knockout and perhaps one of the top fashion exhibits I’ve ever seen next to the Christian Dior, Couturier du Reve exhibit in 2017.
The show is currently in Paris at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs/MADD, and I decided to revisit it, as a tribute to Mugler who died last month at the age of 73.
As you enter the exhibit on the second floor, you are immediately drawn into Mugler’s world of fantasy, spectacle, costume, fetish, couture, humor, and glamour.
The exhibit, which is on two floors, is divided into nine sections, Metamorphoses, Robot, Le Lab Mugler, La Mode Mise en Scene, Belle du Jour de Nuit, Dans L’Oeil du Photographe: Helmut Newton, Took Funky, Stars et Strass, and Macbeth et Lady M, which brilliantly illustrate and chronicle the different phases of Mugler’s prodigious creative output.
The multi-talented Mugler was not only a brilliant fashion designer, but he also was a photographer (he was so controlling at a photo shoot that Helmut Newton was shooting for one of his collections, that he urged him to take his own photos, thus launching his photo career), costume designer, and film and video director in addition to developing fragrances and cosmetics.
Mugler shot to fame in the 1980s, and hit his pinnacle in the early 1990s, with his outrageous and daring clothes and outsized shoulder pads. His runway shows were legendary extravaganzas, and he was one of the first designers to use people of color, plus size models, and trans gender models in his shows. One of the most memorable Mugler ventures was designing the clothes for the 1992 George Michael video, Too Funky, which starred a cavalcade of the first generation of super models including Linda Evangelista, Estelle, Tyra Banks, Eva Herzigová, and Nadja Auerman.
In 1992, Mugler launched his first perfume, Angel, packaged in a blue tinted bottled resembling a star pattern, and it instantly became the number one best-selling fragrance in the world, afterward he launched other successful fragrances. In 2002, Mugler retired from designing clothes and moved to other artistic endeavors including designing costumes for Cirque du Soleil, being the creative director for Beyonce, directing and creating a music video for the Eurovision song contest. Mugler came out of retirement for a brief moment in 2019 to design a dress for Kim Kardashian for the Met Gala.
