Nijinski, Eyal & Ashton: Opéra National de Paris

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays and for the last seven years I have published this French Thanksgiving vocabulary list, courtesy of my former New York French teacher, Luc Georges.

Since Thanksgiving is not an official holiday in France, many ex-pats postpone their Thanksgiving dinner for Friday or Saturday, but some are traditionalists and make it on Thursday. I will be going to a friend's house Saturday night.

Restaurant La Halle aux Grains at Bourse de Commerce

There’s been a lot of buzz about the restaurant, Restaurant La Halle aux Grains inside the new Bourse de la Commerce Museum in the press and from friends and tour clients, who have gone and raved about it. 

I took some tour clients last week to Bourse de la Commerce Museum and they wanted me to select a restaurant to have lunch after, and I thought it would be a perfect place, since they were foodies and had gone to many of the top restaurants during their stay in Paris. 

I had visited the museum when it first opened a few months ago and tried to get a glimpse at the restaurant but you needed a reservation to enter. 

Restaurant La Halle aux Grains is on the top floor of the museum. After we confirmed our reservation at the front desk, we were taken to our table. Along the way was a series of intimate dining salons, each with just three or four tables. They all had startling views facing the Saint Eustache Church, the redesigned Les Halles including the massive metal awning, and the Pompidou Museum. The minimalist design, which was right up my alley, had simple but comfortable black chairs and black café tables, a black and white abstract design, area rug, and my favorite design detail, open metal work drapes and room dividers.

We sat and admired the view since it was a crisp, sunny day with dreamy blue skies and we also admired the place setting especially the china and cutlery, and at one point we all plotted to pilfer at least one item off the table but agreed to behave ourselves. 

First, a little information about Restaurant La Halle aux Grains before I get to our food experience. Head chefs and brothers Michael and Sebastien Bras were inspired by the original use of the La Bourse de Commerce, which was erected in 1763 and was the stock exchange for wheat. They went to the Aubrac region of France to source much of the ingredients for the menu, with a special focus on grains and seeds from their travels around the world. 

I didn’t order a starter but my friends (after our first day of touring we became instant friends) had a whole, roasted celery root, cut into pieces, with black truffle juice, and offered me a taste. It had a potato like texture and the truffle juice gave it a distinct flavor. Next up was a fantastic chicken dish with braised red endive and a sprinkling grains and spices, and the artful presentation looked like a mosaic. We were lucky to have the whole dining room to ourselves and the conversation was fun and lively. Dessert was plump figs roasted in anise flavored butter served with fig leaf ice cream and then the waiter sprinkled some granola on top for extra crunchiness and flavor. 

The impeccable service was gentle and caring but not overbearing or fussy. 

We were having such a great time that none of us wanted to leave but my  friends were leaving the next day and had to get in some last-minute shopping. 

Restaurant La Halle aux Grains has lived up to its hype and buzz and it’s on the top of my list of favorite Paris restaurants at the moment. Best to reserve a few weeks in advance. Restaurant La Halle aux Grains is open for lunch and dinner but also serves coffee, tea, and pastries from 3pm to 7pm.

Boats on the Seine- Series 3

As I continue to take my daily power walk on the Seine, I have captured a new series of boats on the Seine in the autumn light surrounded by the tree foliage. One of my readers asked me to identify the locations of these photos. I start my walk at the Pont Marie and walk west up to Pont Neuf, passing Notre Dame and La Concegerie.

Paris Rooftop Views: Galeries Lafayette and Printemps

Continuing with my Paris Rooftop Views series, today I am focusing on Les Grands Magasins, the great department stores of Paris, Galeries Lafayette and Printemps. Located on the Boulevard Haussmann in the ninth arrondissement, both stores have rooftops that are open to the public. Both also have restaurants on the rooftops. 

The south, east, and west views offer a panorama of Hausmann’s Paris with views as far reaching as the Grand Palais, the Eiffel Tower, and La Defense, but close by you can see the glorious architectural details of the Opera Garnier, Place de la Madeleine, and stacks of orange chimney pots.

Le Théorème de Narcisse- Jean Michel Othoniel

I’ve always admired the work of artist and sculptor Jean Michel Othoniel ever since I saw his Palais Royal metro kiosk in the early 2000s and have followed his work since. I have also had the pleasure of meeting him socially several times through a mutual friend. 

Jean Michel Othoniel works mostly with Venetian blown glass globes in jewel tone colors and metallic finishes, creating impressive sculptures. 

I still vividly remember the wonderful retrospective of his work at the Pompidou Centre in 2011, which displayed his works from 1987 onwards. (CLICK HERE to view). 

When it was announced in September that he was given carte blanche to create an exhibition at the Petit Palais, I couldn’t wait to see it. 

The grand staircase at the entrance to the Petit Palais is lined with cool blue glass bricks, which makes you feel you are walking on water, pleasantly prepares you for what’s waiting inside and outside. 

A set of gold and gunmetal globe sculptures line the garden and the rotunda of the Petit Palais and the affect is stunning, especially with the reflection of the gold sculptures floating on the murk green color ponds. 

The most significant display inside is a jaw dropping assemblance of sculptures almost in free from, delicately hanging by invisible strings from the ceiling against a rug of the same blue bricks at the entrance. Another striking work was an igloo constructed of silver glass bricks. I also loved the colored brick sconces on the walls and the beautiful reflections on the wall from them. 

Le Théorème de Narcisse is an absolute must-see this fall, so put it on the top of your Paris to do list. 

I recently watched a documentary on French television about Jean Michel Othoniel and it focused on a massive installation in which he created of a series of 114 black glass globe sculptures in a fountain for the National Museum of Qatar, working with French architect Jean Nouvel, who designed the building.
