Best of Eye Prefer Paris: Everything’s Coming Up Roses in Paris

If it seems I am posting beaucoup garden photos lately it’s because I can’t get enough of Paris in the springtime.

It’s now the season of the roses and I’ve been chasing their bursting blooms all over town. There’s a hidden gem of a rose garden in the Marais, which I always go to this time of the year to literally smell the roses. They didn’t disappoint this season with their perfume tingling my nostrils.

I got word yesterday of a special rose show in the gardens of the Palais Royal and I raced over to get a glimpse and to take some snaps. In addition to the overflowing rose beds in the garden there was a series of potted rose bushes where the buds were striving to bloom.

After the Palais Royal I was at the Shangri La Hotel for a meeting and spent some quiet moments in their sublime private garden with the most delicate pink roses climbing up a trellis.

Best of Eye Prefer Paris: Gardens at Musée Bourdelle

 

After viewing the Back Side/ Fashion from Behind Exhibition, I took time to visit the front courtyard and back garden. Bourdelle’s mighty sculptures of warriors, Greek gods and goddesses, horses, and historical figures fill the gardens along with manicured hedges, white hydrangeas, and holy hocks.

Antoine  Bourdelle was born in 1861, the son of wood craftsman and cabinet maker and left school to assist his father. At age 24 he was admitted to the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Arts. Bourdelle was not only well schooled, studying under Rodin, he later on formed his own school and taught noted sculptors including Matisse and Giacometti. He moved into the current studio in 1885, working there until his death in 1929. The museum contains over 500 of Bourdelle’s works including marble, plaster, and bronze statues, paintings, pastels, fresco sketches along with Bourdelle’s own collection of works by Eugène Carrière, Eugène Delacroix, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, and Auguste Rodin.

I am taking a petit vacation this week, so here are my summer rerun blogs. Since I’ve received so many comments about the gardens in Gerberoy, I decided to post some parks, gardens, and flower posts from the past. See you the week of August 10 with all new posts. 

I can’t seem to get enough photos of Giverny. I recently did a tour of Giverny with a client and captured some great landscapes and summer flowers. Since it’s the rentree for the French this week and back to school for Americans, I thought this would be a reminder of summer.
