A few weeks ago, Lois Howes, a travel agent friend of mine from Long Island New York, (She was on the list of the best travel agents) read my blog about my 44^th anniversary with Vincent. She also went to art school in New York about the same time as Vincent, but not to Parsons. In school she drew a number of fashion illustrations from the 1970s and she sent me a few of them. They were so cool and retro, that I thought it would be fun to show them on Eye Prefer Paris. 

Then I remembered my editor, Ruthanne Terrero at Travel Agent Central, a site that I write travel articles for, is also a fashion illustrator and sells her drawings and images on Etsy. Funnily enough, Lois told me she had met Ruthanne before in the travel industry and they both live near each other in  Long Island.

“I have always loved to draw fashion illustrations but I’d never done it professionally. When I began seeing artists posting their drawings on Instagram that directed viewers to their Etsy shops, I realized I could actually launch a commercial venture. That was about three years ago and I’ve loved every moment of it as I get notes, mostly from women, who want to gift their friends with illustrations that look like them. It’s been very heartwarming to be able to see them express their friendship by adding lovely sayings to the drawings, along with their names.”

 

 

 

Shutter Photos From Toulouse

Last October when I visited Toulouse, I was strolling on a riverside quai near my hotel, and noticed a series of buildings that all had a similar design to each other. The buildings all used the famous “pink” brick, that’s associated with Toulouse being called the “pink” city and each one had an archway with a window below it. Many of the windows had colorful shutters and interesting iron work, which I thought was photogenic.

More Paris Rooftops

I received such an outpour of comments and feedback on my rooftop photos a few weeks ago, I took some more rooftop photos close to home. 

I have separate zoom lens for my camera that I rarely use. Last week, in an attempt to take new photos during the lockdown, I affixed the zoom lens and got closeups of some rooftops directly from my apartment window. I liked the shots I got, so I took a brief walk outside (wearing a mask and gloves) within a two-block radius of my house and captured more rooftops.

Five Great French TV Series to Watch Now

Since almost all of us are still in lockdown, it’s a great time to hunker down with some popcorn and watch some French television series. Below is a list of my five favorite shows. Please let me know how you like them after you watch them.

Call My Agent/Dix Percent- Three Seasons on Netflix

This funny, smart comedy about the antics of the top talent agency in Paris, is a pure delight. The best part of the show is the appearances of real-life actors playing themselves, including Isabel Huppert, Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Adjani, Fabrice Luchini, and Jean Dujardin. 

A French Village/Un Village Francais- 7 Seasons- Amazon Prime

Warning: This show is highly addictive, and make sure you start watching it earlier in the day, otherwise you will be up all night. 

A fictional story based on real life facts, A French Village, is about a small village in mid-France, close to the Swiss border, that is occupied by the Germans in WW II. The gripping, intense drama details the lives of the residents who struggle to survive by either joining the Resistance, joining the Communist party, or collaborating with the Germans. The storytelling and acting is superb, and almost every episode concludes with a cliff-hanger. Click here to read my full review.

La Mante/The Mantis- 1 Season- Netflix  

A chilling performance by French beauty Carole Bouquet give this gripping thriller an edge. Bouquet plays a serial killer locked behind bars for many years, who is consulted by the police to help solve the case of a copy-cat murderer, like her, who has suddenly surfaced. 

Spiral/Engrenages- 7 Seasons- Amazon Prime

Spiral Is a terrific detective series on par with U.S. series such as Law and Order. You won’t find standard locations of the Eiffel Tower and the Champs Elysees on Spiral, instead you get a view of the gritty, outer arrondissements of Paris. Each season starts with a single crime, following through with unexpected twists and turns.

Huge in France- 1 Season-Netflix

Technically, a U.S. series in English, Huge in France, is sometimes an hilarious riff on the cultural differences between Paris and Los Angeles. Starring Gad Emaleh, the most famous comedian in France, Huge in France tracks Emaleh, who decides to give up everything including his fame and fortune in France, to move to Los Angeles, to raise his teenage son, who he abandoned when he was a child. Emaleh soon realizes his fame in France, does nothing for him in the U.S., and tries to relaunch his career, but bombs doing stand-up at a low level, comedy club. Jerry Seinfeld guess stars in an episode.

Maison Montespan

Last October I was invited to check out Maison Montespan a new, luxury residence, for short term rentals in Paris. 

Just to give you a bit of background and context, I’ve visited and stayed in some of the top five-star hotels in Paris and throughout Europe in the past eight years. After visiting so many of these hotels, the bar for luxury has been set so high and it takes a lot to impress me. I don’t mean to come off like a snob or being jaded, it’s just that the word “luxury” seems to be tossed around an awful lot in the travel industry and the over-usage at this point dilutes its meaning. 

With that said, I was impressed with the level of luxury at Maison Montespan. 

Located on Ave. Montespan off of Ave. George Mandel, in the most upscale part of the 16^th arrondissement, the entrance to Maison Montespan is quite discreet, a black, unmarked door. 

Once inside, the narrow vestibule had a marble and gold inlaid stand with an opulent dried flower and feather arrangement, atop a elaborately carved wood base.

 Nicolas Zimmerman, the sales and marketing director, greeted me and took me on a tour. We started at the bottom level that featured a decent sized workout room, and a hammam (Turkish steamboat). Next was the recreation room with a movie sized, TV screen. Before visiting, Nicolas sent press materials which stated there was an indoor swimming pool. Curious to know where it was, Nicolas responded by pressing a button, which allowed the floor to electronically sink and fill with water, thus creating the lap pool. I thought, now that’s luxury! 

We took the elevator to the top floor, which had an expansive, 800 square-foot pergola and terrace, which had great views of the Paris skyline. The space can fit up to 50 people comfortably for a cocktail soiree, or on a smaller scale, catered lunch or dinner, which Maison Montespan can arrange. 

The other floors contained five sumptuously decorated bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. Interior designer Thomas Lange designed custom made furniture in each suite, accompanied by complementary antiques and the bathrooms feature Carrara marble with toiletries by Frédéric Malle, the top fragrance artisan in France. 

The spacious, living and dining room suite, is like a Parisian salon you would see in a deluxe shelter magazine, filled with plush couches and club chairs in a neutral palette, Parquet floors, art works and sculptures plus a showstopper Steinway grand piano. The dining table can be extended to have up to 16 guests for a grand dinner party. 

Maison Montespan takes its clients privacy and discretion seriously, so it provides a private entrance for cars, a Panic Room device, and an alarm button in every room.

Included with your stay, full continental breakfast service for up to 10 people with pastries by pastry chef Benoît Castel and daily newspaper, a fully stocked refrigerator with guest’s preferred foods, daily housekeeping services, private butler service from 9am-6pm, and an outdoor parking space in front of the private entrance door. 

The staff puts its emphasis on catering to families and can arrange experiences such as cooking and baking classes, piano lessons, magic lessons, on site yoga classes and private trainers, plus city tours and museum treasure hunts. 

The cost for all of this lavish luxury? Rates vary from 5,000 to 10,000€ per night for the entire residence, depending on time of the year.

Leaf Photos From My Garden Courtyard

Although, we are allowed to go outside to exercise for an hour a day, before 10am and after 7pm, I have limited myself to do a daily walk for thirty-minutes in my garden courtyard. Since I started doing this two weeks ago, it’s limited my photo taking reach. 

While taking my walk in the last few days, I’ve noticed the walkway has been littered with leaves in various colors, making some interesting forms. I took my I-Phone camera and shot them up close. Here are the results. I’ve also posted some of them on my new Instagram account, @literal_streetart

Best U.S. Travel Agents for European Travel

I’ve worked with a good number of travel agents over the years who have booked Eye Prefer Paris Tours for their clients, establishing close working relationships with many of them and some have become friends. 

As you could imagine, this is a very difficult time in the travel business, as travel has been mostly restricted around the world and flights, cruises, vacations, and other forms of travel have either been cancelled, or delayed indefinitely. All of my tours have been cancelled until June, and looking forward, I don’t know when people will start booking tours again. 

Travel agents got a double whammy. Interview with Pharmacist Student Malou Labreque

Malou Labreque is a Canadian pharmacy student studying at Paris Descartes. As part of her studies, she works part-time at the Pharmacie du Marais, a few doors from my apartment. I asked Malou if I could interview her for Eye Prefer Paris, as I thought it could be informative during the Covad-19 crisis in France. Here’s what she had to say. 

What was it like to suddenly have to leave university and work in the pharmacy on the so-called front lines? What are your new hours at the pharmacy? 

First of all, at the time the epidemic first struck France, I was completing a mandatory internship at another pharmacy. My university decided it was important for us to finish it and be at the front line mainly to help the pharmacists and to understand how they would react to such unusual circumstances. On the 17^th of March, the official quarantine was put in place, and it was quite extraordinary to see the shift from many customers to almost none. After that week, I started working at my usual pharmacy, but as I am still a student, I don’t have a very regular schedule. These last week I have mostly filled in for colleagues, some of them being sick, or having family members at home that tested positive and thus preferring not to work in fear of contaminating our patients. 

What are the new protocols and rules at the pharmacy in recent weeks in regard to Covid-19? Do they change daily or weekly, and if they do, what are the newer protocols/rules? 

We receive new official guidelines almost every day, sometimes multiple times a day. The most important measure was to ensure that our patients and my colleagues were protected. We installed a security distance between us and the customers and between each patient. We try to regulate the people in the pharmacy to be the least possible to make sure the contamination risk is at its lowest. We wash hands with hydroalcoholic gel between each patient and stay at least 1 meter apart. We disinfect the counters and any other surface as often as we can and advise each patient to wash their hands when they go back home. There are other protocols such as the distribution of masks to the healthcare professionals or the distribution of doliprane (reserved to 1 box per customer) that we follow whenever we get notification. These are strange times, and each must adapt. We advise our patients to stay home, only going out for absolute necessity and wash hands regularly, as these are the official guidelines. 

How are customers acting when they come to you and what are their most frequent questions and comments? 

In general, customers are very responsible and respect the rules. They act kindly towards us and understand that in these special times nothing is the same and they must comply to the new guidelines. I observed that there is a lot of information conveyed by the media that is not exact and people come in asking about that a lot. For example, a lot of customers come in asking for masks while the official information is that we can only distribute them to healthcare professionals. Some come in saying that they heard on TV that if they don’t wear a mask outside, they will be fined, which is not accurate, but they want to have one. This concern is very legitimate, but we are not allowed to sell masks, and some pharmacists have been fined for doing so. We advise the population to cover their mouth and nose with a scarf or handmade mask for now. 

What are the most significant things you learned in the past weeks that you didn’t know before? 

For me, for all of my colleagues and even for our customers, I think this pandemic is going to teach us that we always need to be careful. Washing our hands regularly should be applied to everyday life, COVID or not. These measures are extreme for the moment, but we should all learn from it, and follow-up after the confinement is over. I had to rethink how I see the pharmacist role in the society, being the first respondent and the closest to the population. We have a very important role to reassure and transmit the official guidelines to all that come see us. With this confinement, there has been a surge of domestic violence, and we have been appointed to listen and care for women or men who come see us that are victims of that violence. It’s very important to always listen to our patients, to take the time to reassure them and care for their wellbeing. 

There’s been a great public outpour of respect and appreciation for healthcare workers during the Covid-19 crisis and every night at 8 PM people applaud you from their windows. What’s your reaction to this and how does it make you feel? 

I find this gesture important, as I feel it restores the population’s appreciation towards all healthcare workers. We think about doctors mostly, but dentists, pharmacists, nurses, stretcher bearers, care assistants and many others are also very much exposed to the pandemic and work directly with the infected. I hope that in the future this recognition continues, and that everyone who works, closely or from afar, in the healthcare system is appreciated. 

Why did you decide to study in France instead of Canada for your pharmacy degree?

I have always travelled between Canada and France. I was born in Canada but came to France for the lycée. After that, I went back to Canada and completed and biomedical sciences degree. Then, I decided to go back to France and try the PACES (first common year of medical studies in France giving access to dental, medical, pharmaceutical, midwife and kinesiological studies), and I got accepted in pharmacy. I always felt an attraction to France, especially Paris, and I knew I wanted to come back here. It was a great opportunity and I enjoy it very much. 

What are some of the big differences between pharmacy schooling in France and Canada?

The fields we study are quite different in France and Canada. We have the same knowledge in chemistry and diseases, but in France, there are a lot more classes on plants and natural drugs, as I believe people are much more attracted to homeopathy or naturopathy. The length of the studies is different, the degree is obtained after 4 years in Quebec versus 5 in France. Then both courses can be longer for options or certain specialties (for example working as a hospital pharmacist requires at least one other year of study in France). 

How many years does it take to get your degree and what is the curriculum like? What year are you currently in? 

I am currently finishing my 3^rd year in pharmacy and in France it takes 5 years to complete the studies. After those 5 years, there is a contest for people wishing to continue on to become a medical biologist or work in a hospital. As for students wishing to work in a dispensary, there is no contest but one more year of specialization to complete. In any case, we have classes about plants and natural drugs, systemic diseases, parasites and microbiology, ethics, public health and many options about specific diseases or systems. 

When I saw you the other day at the pharmacy, I asked you why you weren’t wearing gloves. Can you tell me your response again? 

I will only speak for myself as all of my colleagues do as they wish concerning gloves. I prefer not to wear some because they are very irritating to the skin when wore too much. The gloves we have are not surgical gloves and are often powdered, and I personally don’t like having them on. Moreover, with gloves I do protect myself, but I’d have to disinfect them between each patient too. If I touch someone’s prescription and it has the virus on it, I’d have to wash my gloved hands before touching the next person’s prescription. With all those considerations in mind, I prefer not to wear gloves, wash my hands with hydroalcoholic gel as often as necessary and mostly wash with water and soap whenever I have the occasion.
