I was on the bus the other morning coming home from the gym and read on my phone about a new plant based boulangerie that had opened near the Bastille. I urgently rang the bell to get off the bus ASAP and rushed over to Land and Monkeys on the Boulevard Beaumarchais.
Upon arriving, Land and Monkeys appeared to be a typical Paris Boulangerie with fresh baked croissants, breads, pastries, sandwiches and quiches lining the shelves and refrigerated cases. Except that they were all plant based, and none of them had butter, cream, or eggs, usually the essential ingredients that make these things so delectable.
I decided to taste the croissant, because in my mind, that would be the true test of whether a croissant could make the grade without butter. On the outside there were no detectable signs that it looked different from any other of the thousands of croissants I had bought and consumed. Another test for a good croissant is the flakiness, and once I bit into it, the crumbs and flakes landed on my shirt and on my plate. (Even after living in Paris for fifteen years, I still haven’t figured out how to neatly eat a croissant. Can someone help me out here?). As far as the taste, I would rate it a 7.5 or 8 on a scale of 1-10.
Land and Monkeys, which is the first all plant based/vegan boulangerie in Paris, was started by Rodolphe and Yoshimi Landemaine, who own the popular chain of boulangeries throughout the Paris area, Maison Landemaine. Land and Monkeys, only uses organic ingredients that are sourced locally, within 200km of Paris. To further their commitment to plant-based ingredients, they give 2% of their profits to non-profit organizations that protect animals.
The prices are about the same as they would be at a regular boulangerie; They had a formule of a coffee and croissant for 3€, and the croissant separately is 1.20€
I brought home a loaf of their whole grain bread and I’ve enjoyed toasting a slice every morning with some sea salt butter. I hope Land and Monkeys opens a branch closer to my house soon.
