It’s been a while since there’s been a fashion exhibit at Musee des Decratifs, and the reason why, is that the fashion gallery was being renovated.
The reopening of the gallery is something to celebrate, a venture into one of the greatest fashion magazines, Harper’s Bazaar. In recording its 152-year history, the exhibit shows us how much one magazine influenced the culture of fashion.
Covering two floors, the seamlessly and smartly curated show displays all aspects of the magazine- covers, page spreads, videos, clothing, and accessories.
One of the highlights, is the collection of 60 garments from the original features in the magazine, including the gown from the iconic Avedon shot of Dovima with the elephant.
There’s also a chronological breakdown of its editors, including Carmel Snow, Diana Vreeland, Alexey Brodovitch, Liz Tilberis, and Glenda Bailey. A large screen shows a clip of the musical number “Think Pink” from the film “Funny Face”, with Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire, in which the fashion editor Maggie Presscot, (Kay Thompson in the film) is based upon Diana Vreeland, with Astaire, a facsimile of Richard Avedon.
Another important aspect of Harper’s Bazaar is its fruitful collaborations with artists, illustrators, and photographers, including Dali, Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, Erté, Peter Lindbergh, and Patrick Demarchelier.
If you love fashion exhibitions, now is the time to visit Paris with this show, the first Louboutin exhibition ever, and the show at the Yves Saint Laurent Museum about YSL’s closest muse, Betty Cartoux, which I will write about soon.
