Last Thursday was the press day for the newest Atelier des Lumieres spectacle, Monet, Renoir…Chagall.
The two previous shows, Klimt in 2018, and Van Gogh in 2019, were smash hits, selling out on many dates.
Notice the … after Renoir, and before Chagall. The reason is because, a range of important artists who painted in between the time of Monet, Renoir and Chagall are shown during the spectacle including Matisse, Andre Derain, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, and Raoul Dufy.
Two important art movements following one another during that period, Impressionism and Fauvism, are represented, along with the theme, The Light of the Mediterranean.
This is the first time Atelier des Lumieres has dedicated a show to multiple artists, and the results are mostly positive. Perhaps mixing it up gives more of a history and context in this case, but I thought Chagall was an odd choice to have alongside Monet and Renoir, as his style and the time period is so far afield from them. Perhaps a separate show with painters of the same movement and time period as Chagall, such as Soutine and Modigliani would have been a better fit.
That said, it was still stimulating to see all of these great artists work come alive in such an animated way, along with great music to match from Debussy and Ravel, to Billy Holiday and Janis Joplin.
Despite my slight criticism, you should still put Atelier des Lumieres: Monet, Renoir…Chagall on the top of your Paris must-do list.
Ateliers des Lumieres is extending its reach with a new spectacular space in Bordeaux, Bassins des Lumieres, opening April 20, 2020. The space, almost 500,000 square feet is an abandoned army bunker from WW11, will be one of the largest multi-media spaces in the world.
