While I was staying in Le Vesinet last week, I visited the food market in Saint Germain en Laye, the town next door.
The market is open on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday and is located in a big, open plaza along side some cafes. I went on Sunday, the day before the official rentree, the time when the French return from their August vacation, which was Monday. The market was jammed with people refreshing their cupboards and refrigerators with fresh produce, cheeses, meat, seafood, bread, and pastries.
I bought a bag of Reine Claude plums and finished the juicy, sweet as candy gems before I even got out of the market. It was a great time to be at the market, as the bounty of summer fruits and vegetables were still in their prime ripeness – white peaches, wild strawberries, plump green and red tomatoes, bite-size Mirabelle plums, and petite cantaloupes. Fall vegetables were beginning to trickle in including Girolle mushrooms, butternut squash, and pumpkins. Ridiculously beautiful hydrangeas permeated the flower stalls along with tall stalks of sunflowers.
We were tempted to buyout the market, but remained disciplined and bought just enough to suffice for the next few days, like true Parisians.

I am so pleased to have Ann Mah as my guest this week at on A Bite of Paris. We went to Le Mistral, her favorite Paris bistro and had their signature dish, aligot, a rich, creamy mix of whipped potatoes and cheese from the Aveyron region.
