It was Vincent’s birthday last Friday and we spent a day at the beach in Trouville.
My first memory of Trouville is when Lynn Jeffress aka Lunch with Lynn, invited me to visit her when she was spending a week there in March of 2010. I remember the charm and quaintness of the seaside village and went back another time with Lynn in 2014.
Vincent had never been to Trouville, so I thought it would be a pleasant day trip for the special occasion. We took the two-hour train ride from Gare Saint Lazare. It turned out to be a cool, blustery day and Vincent was smart enough to wear pants, as I wore shorts and paid the price but nearly shivering from the cold. The sky was dramatic a canvas of gray in varying shades, creating an excellent backdrop for taking photos. Beachgoers were bundled up in nylon windbreakers with hoods but later in the afternoon after lunch, the clouds parted and Mr. Sunshine and his best friend, blue sky, smiled some relief on us. Kids were now roaming freely on the sand, running, jumping, falling, cartwheeling, and dipping their toes in the icy water. Adults were hanging out in their seaside cabanas, playing card and board games, reading French literature, sunbathing, soundly snoring, and soaking up precious rays before the ominous clouds invaded once more later that afternoon.
Lunch was at an adorable café and home design boutique, Villa Gypsy, where we enjoyed homemade quiche along with Vincent’s favorite dessert, carrot cake. After it started raining later in the day, we sat at a classic seafood café and indulged in a plate overflowing with fries served with mustard and a glass of rosé. One last food stop before we boarded our train was a shop selling fudge, reminiscent of our formative years spent at the Jersey shore.
I am so pleased to have Ann Mah as my guest this week at on A Bite of Paris. We went to Le Mistral, her favorite Paris bistro and had their signature dish, aligot, a rich, creamy mix of whipped potatoes and cheese from the Aveyron region.
