I was invited to the opening of Atelier des Lumieres yesterday, a new space for digital exhibitions. Located in the 11th arr. on rue Saint Maur, Atelier des Lumieres, is a former iron factory that has been transformed into state of the art exhibition space with 140 video projectors and a spatalised sound system that covers a surface area of over 33,000 square feet including the floors and ceilings. Bruno Monnier, the president of Culturespaces, the company that owns Atelier des Lumieres, has created a successful concept of digital entertainment starting in Les Baux-de-Provence, which receives over 600,000 visitors yearly.
The inaugural exhibition is a celebration of Gustave Klimt and the glory of the rich art and culture of Vienna in the late 19th century. The main video is staged in six continuous parts; Neoclassical Vienna, Klimt and the Vienna Secession, Klimt’s Use of Gold, Klimt’s Vision of Nature, Egon Schiele, and Klimt’s Images of Women.
The production sweeps you off your feet with astounding images swirling all around the walls and floors, along with an intense soundtrack by Wagner, Strauss, Chopin, Mahler, Puccini, Beethoven and Philip Glass. From the iconic, sensual portraits to the nature of the forest to the bold nudes of Schiele to the decorative and jewel-like objets of the time, you are totally immersed and carried away into the opulent La Belle Epoque.
I have seen these types of illumination exhibits mostly in outdoor venues in Avignon, Paris, Chartres, and Nancy but viewing one in an indoor space was a more powerful and intimate experience.
A second, shorter video focuses on a lesser known artist of the same period in Vienna, Hundertwasser and a third video, Poetic_AI is set in present day, using AI (artificial intelligence) and black and white imagery.
