I decided to combine Lunch with Lynn and Lunch on Rue Faubourg Saint Denis in the same post.
Lunch with Lynn: Les Artizans
Vincent was my lunch companion at Les Artizans, a casual restaurant near Les Halles. At the narrow entrance is an inviting community table and a refrigerated case with a preview of mouthwatering desserts, giving way to a spacious dining room in the rear.
Vincent has been on a mostly vegetarian diet for several years and chose the wok with seasonal vegetables. Served in a terracotta bowl, the big chunks of vegetables were steamed just right and accompanied by brown rice. My salted hake had a delicious crispy skin on the outside and was served with spicy chorizo and cauliflower puree.
The waitperson was the sugar devil in disguise, presenting a lavish smorgasbord of delectable desserts created by pastry chef Mathieu Mandard. (Mandard used to be the pastry chef at Café Pouchkine). We shared the vanilla tart, a creamy pastry with an intense vanilla bean flavor.
The two course meal was 18€, an excellent value for such high quality food.

Lunch on Rue Faubourg Saint Denis: 5 Pailles
I was in one of those indecisive food moods and wandered up and down rue Faubourg Saint Denis a few times, pondering what to eat. I finally settled on 5 Pailles, a curious looking coffee bar with a small but attractive food menu. The plat du jour was shakshuka, an Israeli dish of baked eggs and spicy tomatoes. It came out of the oven in a deep pan with ornate brass handles and a side of toast. The taste and preparation was fairly authentic and similar to the ones I had in Israel but some Feta cheese sprinkled on top nicely cooled down the fiery tomatoes.
Tempting homemade desserts included carrot cake, scones, and financiers but an American style cinnamon bun stood spoke to me. Served on a black and white polka dot plate, it made my Instagram that day. A strong and flavorful café noisette was an excellent compliment to my cinnamon bun.
A congenial Turkish man owns 5 Pailles and I asked his recommendation for a Turkish restaurant on the street, which I will go to next month.
