After being inspired by my Montmartre Cemetery photo series from last month, I decided to seek out other cemeteries and see what I find.
I visited Passy Cemetery in the 16th arrondissement, right off the Place Trocadero on a pleasant, sunny Sunday afternoon. Surprisingly for a Sunday, the cemetery was mostly deserted, with just a handful of people meandering. Again, I strolled around and let my senses fill before I started to shoot my photos. Passy Cemetery was more compact and orderly than Montmartre, and also many of the tombstones, mausoleums, and chapels were of La Belle Epoque/Art Nouveau design.
Since the cemetery overlooks the Palais de Challiot, you can see the Eiffel Tower looming over many of the tombstones, an interesting juxtaposition.
The current Passy Cemetery was constructed in 1820 and since it’s in the 16th arrondissement, it’s the cemetery for the well to do, with the only heated waiting room of a Paris cemetery. The current entrance way was designed by Rene Berger in 1934. Actor, director Jean-Louis Barrault, composer Claude Debussy, and painters Edouard Manet and Berthe Morisot are buried in Passy.
