Last Thursday was the opening of Vincent’s new exhibition Audition/6:40AM. The title refers to a young actor Vincent met in New York last year, starting with an online conversation, which led to meeting in person. When meeting the actor for coffee, he was on his way to an audition, which sparked the idea for the show.
“This new work is the result of that meeting and unaware to him, or even me at that very moment, I had found the subject of this new body of work. A mash-up, a jump-cut, an assembly of photographs, drawings, and video that expose my compulsive desire to flirt with, and objectify the subject. The final piece in the exhibit is a short film, an audition, his audition, and mine”, as quoted in his artist’s statement for the exhibit.
Encompassing the mediums of painting, collage, drawing, photography, and video to tell the story, the exhibit unfolds in two separate rooms of Galerie NEC.
The first two pieces at the entrance, convey Vincent’s fascination with New Wave French Cinema. Referencing his cinema idol Jean Luc Godard with photo stills from his films, he also uses Godard’s quotes “ “Cinema is truth twenty-four frames per second” and “ All you need for a movie is a gun and a girl”.
On the left side is a series of eight collage portraits, with sensual black and white photos of the subject’s head and bare torso. Contrasting these are three square abstract paintings painted on a grid, thickly saturating the canvas with black, gray and white, with a speck of yellow. Another square painting has thick elongated drips of blue, resembling filmstrips.
The second room presents 6 collages with small, cutup Polaroids against geometric shapes in baby pastel shades of blue, pink, and yellow.
A short video gives movement and dialogue to the audition process, with the handsome subject sporting a British accent and corduroy cap. A snippet of the video has a naïve, young Marilyn Monroe spouting lines in All About Eve.
The opening was last Thursday night with friends and collectors gathering. It was great to catch up with so many friends I hadn’t seen in a while.
We hope you will come and see Audition/6:40AM.
