Last month when I had lunch at the Hotellerie de Bas-Bréau in Barbizon, I told you that the owner’s son had recently opened a new restaurant in Paris.
I visited L’Elan 9 in the 9th arr. on the rue du Faubourg Poissonniere with my friend Jan from Los Angeles, who was in Paris for a month. I am familiar with the street, as it’s been a haven for new chefs and experimental restaurants, including Bol Porridge Bar and Abri, which I both wrote about here.
The outside and interior look like a typical rendition of the newest Paris bistros, with minimal design, choosing to showcase the food rather than the décor overshadowing it. Once inside, the all dark wood tables and teal tromp l’oeil painted wall made the space warmer.
L’Elan 9 offers a set lunch menu for 19€ for entrée/plat or plat/dessert, 25€ for three courses, and 15€ for just the plat du jour.
We started with salmon roll with cheese and avocado mousse. A version of this dish is quite frequent on menus in Paris and frankly, kind of tired by now. However, L’Elan’s version was fresh and somehow new, with an inspired presentation. Next up, our plat of haddock was served in a pool of squid ink butter, resembling shiny black gold, accompanied with strands of fresh mushrooms. The strong taste of the sauce complimented the tender, simple fish. Dessert, a broken up iceberg of two pieces of meringue with a scoop of apple sorbet sandwiched in between, on a bed of delicate poached pears, was a smart finish to cleanse the strong taste of the fish.
After lunch, I introduced myself to Eric and his girlfriend Leonie, such a nice and very attractive couple. I told him how I met his parents the week before and how much I liked them. He certainly inherited his parent’s warmth and hospitality, as he took time to speak with me at length about how he opened the restaurant and what he hoped to accomplish, even though he was hectically busy turning out the lunch menu.
I wish Eric and Leonie the best of luck and please support them by going to the L’Elan 9.
L’Elan 9 also serves a full a la carte menu at lunch and dinner.
