Best of Eye Prefer Paris: Snow in the Garden of Rodin Museum

I’m taking a blogging break this week, so enjoy some of my best of Eye Prefer Paris posts. There was an intense heat wave last week with temperatures in the mid 90s. It may be the same for many of you where you live, so I am posting a series of snow photos from past years.

Snow is an uncommon occurrence in Paris and snow that sticks is practically a miracle. Last Saturday morning about 11AM the snow came swiftly and steadily, and I watched with baited breath to see if it would stick. Stick it did, and I was racking my brain deciding where I should go to take photos. The garden at the Rodin museum is one of my favorite places in the summer and I thought, imagine how beautiful the great black Rodin statues would look dusted with pure white snow. The wonderful surprise was there two were massive white Henri Moore sculptures and the texture of the snow on the white marble is quite stunning. If you are ever lucky enough to be in Paris when the snow sticks, treat yourself to the garden at the Rodin museum and let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Best of Eye Prefer Paris: Snow in Jardin du Luxembourg 1

I’m taking a blogging break this week, so enjoy some of my best of Eye Prefer Paris posts. There was an intense heat wave last week with temperatures in the mid 90s. It may be the same for many of you where you live, so I am posting a series of snow photos from past years.

I was lucky enough to be able take the morning off last month when yet another snow storm blanketed Paris. Again, I was excited as kid when I looked out the window to see white flakes falling and I was gleeful and giddy to go play in the snow. No snowball fights, building snowmen, or sledding for me. I was happy as a clam to wield my camera and shoot the heck out of the winter wonderland inside the Jardin du Luxembourg. I walked in the snowy silence around the perimeter of the park (actually the park was closed and I had to shimmy my camera in between the slots of the iron gates to get my photos), then walked down Ave. de L'Obsevartoire capturing the statues lining the Jardin Robert Cavalier de la Salle and Jardin Marco Polo. Three hours and over 200 photos later I ended my trek at the Montparnasse Cemetery. I have divided the photos in two posts. Don't let the snow melt!

Meredith Mullins: The Merry Month of Visitors

June seems to bring a slew of visitors to Paris (and to my doorstep). I revert to being a part-time tourist as I wander around town with them. The reward is that I see Paris in a different light. Through new eyes. From Palais Royal to Versailles to the Seine, The scenes are familiar, but the set is always made more interesting when a human element enters the stage. The world is full of characters, connections, and comedy. These stories unfold near us everyday. You just have to be looking.

Air Conditioned Restaurants in Paris

It’s been blazing hot in Paris the last few days with temperatures soaring up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit with no relief in sight till Saturday.

Parisians are not fans of air conditioning no matter how hot it gets and in fact they don’t really believe in fans either. Even in the excessive heat, they still wear scarves. I saw a man the other day wearing shorts, T-shirt and a scarf tied around his neck like it was winter.

Needless to say there’s hardly an air conditioning in Parisian restaurants. Café after café has customers sweating away while ordering ice cold drinks.

I am still a die-hard American in certain respects even after living here almost 12 years, and I have to have AC when it gets this hot. One of my first apartment purchases was a portable air-conditioner.

So last night when I was desperately seeking an air-conditioned restaurant I thought I would do some further research and create a list, so here goes. Now it’s pretty obvious the five-star hotel restaurants and many of the Michelin star restaurants will have A/C, so I will leave most of those off the list below. Stay cool!

Paris Perfect by June E. Rives

I met June Rives in 2014 through mutual friends and we hit it off right away. Not only did we discover we had other mutual friends, sort of a six degrees of separation thing, but we also shared the same love of Paris plus we had many other common interests.

June’s love affair with Paris started when she had a public relations firm and her clients included Air France and Meridien Hotels. Perfecting her French while working with these companies, June eventually sold her business and moved to Paris full time. She started a travel consultancy for the American market organizing trips to France, Italy and England. June now divides her time between Paris and Houston.

The thing I didn’t know about June was she was also an author. Her first book Merci, Monsieur, A Guide for Living in La Belle France, written in 2004, is an insider’s guide for expats living in France.

June has changed directions in her writing and recently completed her first novel, Paris Perfect. The plot description below has enough intrigue and twists and turns to entice even the most jaded readers of adventure and romantic fiction.

Texan Punkin Lowery is in trouble. Her fiance has committed suicide, her mother has died suddenly, and her business is failing. She is turning 50, single and alone. She does not know where to turn. She thinks of Paris, her soul place, since she first visited at 16. With nothing to lose, she escapes to the City of Light where she rents a luxurious apartment she cannot afford overlooking the Eiffel Tower and begins a torrid affair with her landlord, Count de Richmonde, a filmmaker, married, and 10 years her junior. She immerses herself in the life of an ex-pat joining the American Club. At the Club, she meets the love of her life, Jean Aumont, a winemaker from Bordeaux. Through the Club's program to help disadvantaged girls, she adopts a protege, the beautiful but troubled Madeleine Junot. Madeleine, age 20, is an orphan whose mother died when she was five. Her father is unknown. A promising artist, Madeleine has been working as a prostitute on the streets of Paris, and has a menacing pimp named Marcel. Through a bizarre set of circumstances, it is discovered that Madeleine is Jean's child. Problems ensue when Jean's imperious mother, Giselle, will not accept either Madeleine as her grand- daughter, or the 'gauche americaine', Punkin as Jean's wife. Happiness for the family finally arrives at Christmas after Jean has survived a life-threatening riding accident. Punkin and Jean marry and settle into a lavish lifestyle in the Aumont Chateau. Punkin thinks she has found the perfect life, but troubles continue when Marcel stalks the family and involves them in several life-threatening incidents. At the end of Paris Perfect, Marcel has caught up with Madeleine and she has killed him. She is on trial for murder, and her life as well as the lives and reputation of the Aumont family are in peril.

Door of the Month: 11 Quai aux Fleurs

At 11 Quai aux Fleurs on the Ile de Cité is a pair of lovely doors made of forest green lacquered wood with fancy ironwork and male and female heads I believe are from the Renaissance period, made of rusted iron.

The most interesting part of the building is the inscription above the door: Ancienne Habitation d’Heloise et d’ Abelard Rebatie 1849

Heloise and Abelard lived in the 12th century and in my research I found out they lived on the same site of the present building, which was rebuilt in 1849.

The stone heads above the door represent Heloise and Abelard.

David Burke's Writers in Paris: The Real George Orwell

One of my favorite literary walks is A Band of Outsiders in the Place de la Contrescarpe/Rue Mouffetard area on the fringe of the Latin Quarter. Here were James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Honoré de Balzac, Victor Hugo, and other great writers, our man George Orwell included. He lived in the Rue du Pot-de-Fer, off Mouffetard, where he began writing his first book, Down and Out in Paris and London. He calls the street “the Rue du Coq d’Or”:

“It was a very ravine of tall, leprous houses, lurching toward one another in queer attitudes, as though they had all been frozen in the act of collapse. All the houses were hotels and packed to the tiles with lodgers, mostly Poles, Arabs and Italians. At the foot of the hotels were tiny bistros, where you could be drunk for the equivalent of a shilling. On Saturday about a third of the male population of the quarter was drunk. There was fighting over women, and the Arab navvies who lived in the cheapest hotels used to conduct mysterious feuds, and fight them out with chairs and occasionally revolvers.”

George Orwell was just short of twenty-six when he arrived in the spring of 1928 in the Rue du Pot-de-Fer. To the distress of his father, a retired colonial administrator of the Indian Britain Empire, his son had resigned a fine position at the Imperial Police in Burma to become a writer. He lived in a squalid hotel at No. 6 in the bug-infested Hôtel des Trois Moineaux, as he calls it, and describes it with such loving disgust in Down and Out. The spur for this book came from a sudden plunge into poverty after most of his money was stolen. In the novel “a young Italian who called himself a compositor” takes the money from his hotel room; in real life, it was a prostitute named Suzanne. Over the following three months, he went for as long as three days without eating, pawned all his clothes except what he was wearing, and scrounged for menial jobs, most unforgettably as a dishwasher in the none-too-sanitary bowels of a luxury hotel.

The poverty was largely voluntary. His Aunt Nellie lived in Paris and would gladly have come to his aid if he had asked. But he wanted to know what living in these depths was like. And though he was only a visitor, he gave a voice to those who had no escape.

When Down and Out in Paris and London was accepted for publication in 1933, he avoided embarrassing his proper father by using a pseudonym, choosing the name of a little river called the Orwell near his parents’ home in East Anglia. He intended to use the word “Orwell” only for this first book, but the reviews were so good and the sales so unexpectedly healthy that the pseudonym of George Orwell became too valuable to abandon. So then Animal Farm, 1984, and so many others went by the Orwell name.

So what was real name?

Wedding Photos of Morgan Pulsifer and Luke Tompkins

Last January Morgan Pulsifer emailed to ask me advice about small gardens in Paris. She was planning to elope with her fiancé and asked about Cour de Rohan and other small gardens in Paris for her wedding ceremony. I replied I was happy to suggest places and I could help her plan the wedding since I had done that once before in Paris a few years ago. I also told her I am a photographer and suggested I could take photos of the ceremony. She said no to the wedding planning but yes to taking the photos.

Fast forward to May 24th to the wedding day. It was a warm, overcast day and the plan was to have the ceremony in the intimate rose garden of Square Saint-Gilles Grand Veneur in the Marais. I was meeting the groom Luke along with their pastor from the U.S. and Morgan would follow a few minutes later with the pastor’s wife, who helped Morgan prepare for the ceremony. I took some photos of Luke looking dapper in his navy blue suit while waiting for the bride.

Morgan arrived about 30 minutes later looking absolutely radiant in a stylish cocktail length, strapless white dress with a tulle skirt and topped with a chic white marabou stole. Under her full skirt was a pair of snazzy pink satin platform shoes with a sexy instep strap showing off Morgan’s high instep. (Don’t forget, I used to sell ladies shoes and I still notice these things).

The pastor performed a moving fifteen-minute ceremony followed by the newlyweds embracing for a long, passionate kiss. After the ceremony I took more photos of the happy couple around the garden against the background of the roses in various colors.

We walked to the Place des Vosges to shoot more photos, attracting a lot of attention and felicitations from strangers in the square. Next we went to the garden of the Hotel de Sully and I took some romantic photos.

Our last stop was Palais de Chaillot on the Place Trocadero, which has a spectacular view of the Eiffel Tower. Morgan and Luke started to unwind a bit and I captured them having some intimate moments along with Luke sweeping Morgan off her feet with a dramatic kiss in front of the Eiffel Tower. It doesn’t get more romantic than that.

We finished about 1:30PM and the newlyweds stayed another day in Paris followed by a whirlwind honeymoon to Switzerland, Italy and Germany.

I wish Morgan and Luke a happy and long marriage and hope they are as happy as Vincent and I have been for the past forty years.
