It’s almost summertime and many of you are probably putting your book list together, looking for some good summer reads for your vacation and long weekends. I thought I would inject your list with the king of sardonic humor, David Sedaris.
I’m sure you are familiar with David’s books from the past and have read about his odd and hilarious adventures in Paris a number of years ago in, Me Talk Pretty One Day.
I have been a big fan of David Sedaris since his first book Barrel Fever was published in 1994 and have enjoyed his off the wall humor and over active imagination.
The latest David Sedaris book is Theft by Finding: Diaries 1977-2002, a departure from his usual format of essays and short stories. In the first of two volumes over a forty-year span, Theft by Finding is a diary kept by Sedaris in which he records everything about his keen observations including vicious gossip, comments, soap opera plots and secrets told to him by perfect strangers.
Theft by Finding should be a roller coaster of the bizarre, the zany and the unexpected and I can’t wait to read it. I hope you feel the same.

How did you enjoy Paris's Village of Art and Sin by John Baxter?
One more thing, here’s an anecdote about how I met David Sedaris in Paris.
About six years ago The Village Voice Bookshop in Saint Germain (now closed) had a reading by David Sedaris. Of course word spread like wildfire and when I arrived at the small bookshop about 30 minutes before the reading, a line was winding down from upstairs out the door of the main floor. Luckily Lynn (from Lunch with Lynn) was there about two hours earlier and was holding a place for me. Lynn and everybody else was sitting on the cramped floor patiently waiting for David to arrive. There was no way I could physically survive standing or sitting on the floor for another hour without doing damage to my back, so I perused the room for a chair. I beamed on a single chair and was curious why no one was sitting in it, so I sat. A moment later an employee said the chair was for David and I needed to move. Not wanting to budge I politely made a counter offer: I promised I would gladly vacate my chair when David arrived. “Fair enough” she said and I remained in my chair with a sigh of relief.
Another 45 minutes passed and David Sedaris made his way towards my chair. Star struck by being in spitting distance of one of my writing idols, I immediately bolted up, effusively apologizing for brazenly taking his chair. Much to my surprise he said to stay put, he was happy to stand and do his reading on a podium. Being a golden opportunity to hob knob with David, I struck up a conversation without acting like over-gushing, over zealous fan (and saying banal things like I’ve read every word you’ve ever written, I can’t believe I’m standing next to you, I’m never going to wash the hand you shook, etc.). We actually had a common friend; the woman that lived in our Paris apartment before we did was David’s partner Hugh’s college friend, so I brought her name up to start the conversation. I have a thing for bad puns and a hunch believed David did too. I started spewing puns and David followed. Finally we were trying to top each others puns when the fun ended and David had to get on with the reading.
That is my story of my star struck moment with David Sedaris.
