I’ve seen some great art exhibits this fall but the absolute Don’t miss/Do Whatever you can to see it show is Icons of Modern Art. The Shchukin Collection at Fondation Louis Vuitton.
The rare and possibly once in a lifetime show pays homage to Sergei Shchukin, one of the foremost art collectors of the 20th century. A textile industrialist from Moscow, Shchukin amassed an incredible and diversified collection of Impressionist and Modern art from the early 20th century. He befriended art dealer Paul Rosenenberg from Paris, who represented Picasso, Matisse and Braque and eventually commissioned Matisse to create a series of paintings for his Moscow mansion.
Due to political reasons the Russian government in 1948 broke up the collection and little was heard of it after then. Thanks to a collaboration between Bernard Arnault and Hermitage Museum and the Pushkin Museum, the collection has been made available to the public for the first time since 1948.
The 130 piece collection includes over 50 artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Paul Gauguin, Claude Monet, Albert Marquet, Paul Cézanne, André Derain, Henri (Le Douanier) Rousseau, Edgar Degas, Vincent Van Gogh, Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Edouard Vuillard, Kasimir Malévitch and Alexandre Rodtchenko.
What I liked most about the exhibit was the quality and consistency of the collection. I’ve seen a number shows in the past with private collections and many times there would be a dozen or so stand out works but the remainder were mediocre at best or just fillers.
One room had about eight Matisse’s and my jaw just dropped. I spent about 15 minutes there and came back a few minutes later to take it in again. There were also a number of unusual figurative and Cubist Picasso paintings that I had never seen before.
Icons of Modern Art. The Shchukin Collection is truly remarkable and should not be missed. A special trip to Paris to see it would absolutely be worth it.
