Leave it up to the French to take the classic button down shirt and make it sexy and chic.
To celebrate fashion week, the concept boutique Merci has highlighted the wardrobe staple for men and women, the shirt. According to history the original shirt before the Middle Ages took the form of a collarless shirt more like a tunic, with a slit down the front. At first it was an undergarment for men to protect their skin or as a nightshirt. Eventually it evolved into having a collar and placard in the front. In the 19th century the close fitting, more structured shirt came into vogue and in the 20th century the shirt crossed over to women’s wardrobes.
One of the brands of shirts Merci is promoting is Brooks Brothers, with a pop up shop featuring a selection of shirts, ties, cuff links and suspenders. The shop is a downsized replica like the original shop on Madison Ave. in New York where the shirts are laid out in wood cabinets, stacked in orderly piles with an elastic band around each one. The iconic cotton button down shirt designed in 1854 is offered in addition to other models including smaller sizes for women.
