I am always looking for new techniques to learn French and a few weeks ago I was happy to receive a free two-month trial course from Frantastique. Frantastique offers online French classes with a daily email lesson.
Before the lesson, I was sent a questionnaire testing my knowledge of French and my answers permitted Frantastique to customize my lessons according to my level. Lesson 1 started with a quirky animated video where two space aliens land in Paris and discover famous French citizens such as Edith Piaf and Victor Hugo. After watching, there were questions pertaining the video about the meaning of certain words, vocabulary, conjugation of verbs, phrase meanings and singular/plural versions of pronouns. What’s also helpful are the audio exercises, where you can distinguish the slight differences in pronunciation. The instructions for each lesson are in French but also have an English button if you don’t understand the information.
When you complete the answers, there is a submit button on the bottom and a few minutes later you receive an email with the right answers and corrections. What I found useful was there was an in depth explanation of the incorrect answers, so I would know not to make the same mistake next time.
There is also a “dessert” on the bottom of each lesson, a bit of Francophone culture in the form of music, cinema or literature relating to the story of the day. The first lesson had a kitschy audio clip from Serge Gainsbourg tune, Melody Nelson.
Each lesson takes about 10-15 minutes, perfect for people on a busy schedule who don’t have a lot for time but enough to learn something valuable everyday.
I look forward to my next lessons and fun videos for the next few weeks.
