Since 2007 the Grand Palais has invited international contemporary artists to fill the massive glass enclosed nave with an installation especially designed for the space. Past artists have included Anselm Kiefer, Richard Serra, Christian Boltanski, Anish Kapoor, Daniel Buren and Ilya and Emilia Kabakov.
Huang Yong Ping, considered the founder of contemporary art in China, was the artist chosen for 2016 and the installation is called Empires.
The first thing I encountered after the entrance were a group of colorful industrial containers stacked upon one another leading to the centerpiece of the exhibition, a 130-ton aluminum serpent skeleton that snakes its way around the container. Ping has lived in Paris since 1989 and in an ode to his new found home, there’s an enlarged version Napoleon’s Bicorne hat, which he wore at the Battle of Eylau.
The best view of Empires is upstairs in the mezzanine, where you can see the full breadth of the work along with the interplay of the containers and the serpent skeleton.
