I still have trouble understanding French films, especially if they have complicated plots or lots of dialogue or if the actors speak very fast. I also miss the subtleties and slang, which sometimes could be essential to viewing. I have to wait for months until the version of the film is released with English subtitles on I Tunes.
In February I learned of a terrific new organization, Lost in Frenchlation, that once a month screens a current French film with English subtitles. Last month I saw an absorbing and intense drama, Mon Roi with Vincent Cassel and Emmanuelle Bercot, which won awards at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015.
For March, Lost in Frenchlation is screening Monsieur Chocolat directed by Roschdy Zem, starring Cesar winning actor Omar Sy and James Thierree. Here is the official synopsis of the film:
‘From circus to theater, from anonymity to fame, the incredible destiny of Chocolat the clown (Omar Sy), the first black stage performer in France. The unprecedented duo he forms with Footit (James Thierrée) is very popular in Belle Époque Paris, until easy money, gambling and discrimination take their toll on their friendship and Chocolat's career. The singular story of an exceptional artist.’
Films are screened at the Art Deco Cinema Studio 28 Theater in Montmartre and also features a cocktail hour before the film. Make sure you arrive at least 30 minutes before so the film doesn’t sell out.

Date: March 18
Cocktail hour starts at 8PM and film is at 9:15
