I thrive in pre-lenten carnival season. The Paris Gambetta parade; Venice Masked Balls; New Orleans beads, beer, and breasts.
This year, the carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands) caught my fancy. The week-long celebration pays tribute to neighborly togetherness, ultimate flamboyance, free-spirited revelry, high-kicking dancing, sequins, sparkles, the height of headgear, and costumes that outdazzle Las Vegas and Cirque du Soleil. The islanders work for months to make the festivities the highlight of the year.
Everyone from three to ninety-three plays a role in the five-hour opening parade. And even though the make-up sometimes creates sad clowns, children who seem older than their years, trashy trannies, and innocents that turn to ghouls—at the heart of things, everyone is having a good time.
