Last week I wrote about the Bol Porridge Bar, which only serves porridge and about the recent proliferation of one-dish restaurants springing up in Paris.
Add another one dish restaurant to the growing list: She’s Cake, a clever pun on the female owner of a cheesecake shop and restaurant, Sephora Saada.
Located in the Marais near Hotel de Ville, She’s Cake sells and serves an astounding variety of classic and out of the ordinary cheesecakes. The front glass counter is symmetrically lined up with artfully decorated individual cheesecakes in an array of muted and vibrant colors. Without even tasting any of them yet my mouth started to water and my sweet tooth was summoned.
Beyond the dazzling cheesecake display in the seating area, She’s Cake also serves savory cheesecakes for lunch. The ridiculously inexpensive formule includes a savory cheesecake, soup, salad, and vegetable for only 9.50€.
There was a choice of two cheesecakes on the formule and Lynn chose the Roquefort, pear and hazelnut and I chose salmon and pesto. The large bowl of pea, zucchini, and fresh mint soup had a good thick consistency but needed some extra flavor, as neither of us could taste the mint and had to add salt and pepper. Lynn was very happy with her cheesecake and mine was excellent but very rich, almost to the point where I couldn’t finish it, which is a rarer occurrence than a total eclipse of the sun. The generous side salad of sautéed eggplant, zucchini, and carrots and the mound of crunchy arugula were a fine balance to the rich cheesecake, plus I got in my veggie quotient for the day.
Stuffed and satisfied but leaving enough room for dessert, I let Lynn choose because I was only having a bit. Cappuccino was the one that floated her boat and my one bite (talk about will power, I could have eaten the whole thing in a Nano-second) was dreamy creamy heaven. Other tempting sweet cheesecake flavors include Oreo, chestnut, wasabi and white chocolate, tahini, cinnamon and coconut, caramel and lavender, and violet flower and blueberry.
