I’m in sunny Naples for my birthday today but Lynn took me for a pre-birthday lunch at Le Coupe Chou last week.
It was a cold, blustery day and the cozy, dark setting of Le Coupe Chou, a well-known bistro up a hill in the Latin Quarter near the Sorbonne, was the perfect setting. I arrived about 12:30 and Lynn was sitting at a table by the window, right in front of the walk-in fireplace. I stood in front of the fireplace for a few moments to warm myself in front of the smoldering embers.
Lynn and I hadn’t seen each other in a while, so it was nice to catch up on the old and the new. We both started off with crocks of steaming of vegetable soup, another way to ward off the cold. For my plat, I chose blanquette de veau and the rustic presentation was in a cast iron pot with a plate underneath with a soothing green color rim. The veal was tender, the pearl onions were sweet and I liked that they served it with basmati rice which is much more flavorful than the bland white rice it’s usually served with. Lynn had salmon in a bathed in delicate sorrel sauce. We skipped dessert because even though some of them tempting, none had the WOW!, must have factor.
The restaurant was opened in 1962 by three actors to welcome performers and spectators from the theater. While we were waiting to be served, I went up and down the various creaky stairways on three levels discovering different rooms. One room was an inviting parlor with plush velvet tufted sofas in tones of mustard and green and beamed ceilings, a great place for a drink or tea. There was also a private dining room on one level, great for a party.
Le Coupe Chou offers a 15€ lunch menu with plat du jour, wine or bottled water, and coffee and 21€ lunch menu with plat du jour, wine or bottled water, dessert and coffee.
If you want classic, hand cooked French comfort food and a cozy dining experience Le Coupe Chou is it.
