Olivier Dupon is a prolific author and tastemaker and has written several coffee table books in recent years including The New Artisans, Encore! The New Artisans, The New Jewelers, The New Patissiers, and Floral Contemporary, all published by Thames & Hudson.
Olivier contacted me in 2011 when he was doing research for The New Patissiers asking me who I thought were the top patissiers in Paris. Of course, I was more than happy to supply him with my list of favorites. The book was published in 2013 and I was glad to see Olivier had written about some of the patisseries I recommended, along with gorgeous color photos.
In 2013 Olivier picked my brain again and asked if I knew any shoe designers in Paris as he was writing a new book about shoe designers. Again, it was a field I had expertise in, as I used to sell ladies shoes in Bergdorf Goodman and also ran a family shoe store. I suggested two local shoe designers with their own shops in the Marais, Fred Marzo and Zoe Lee, both who I’ve written about on Eye Prefer Paris.
Shoe: Contemporary Footwear by Inspiring Designers has just been published and my copy arrived last week. I was thrilled to see the opening photo of the book was a pair of Zoe Lee’s shoes, a pair of white ladies oxfords.
Olivier has thoughtfully curated a collection of 32 international shoe designers, showcasing more artisanal designers rather than the obvious well know brands like Christian Louboutin and Manolo Blahnik. A mix of some well known designers like Rupert Sanderson and Tabitha Simmons are mixed with new and upcoming designers starting to make their mark.
Each designer has an opening page with a biography including inspirations, influences, design process, and quotes, followed again by gorgeous photos and illustrations.
Bien sur, shoe freaks will love this book and have to order it immediately but anyone who appreciates design will also like it.
