I tend to photograph the smaller, more obscure churches of Paris as I sometimes find them more interesting and intimate than the grand churches like Notre Dame.
Notre Dame de Lorette, in the ninth arrondissement, began construction in 1823 under the reign of Louis XVIII and was completed in 1836 under the rein of Louis Philippe. Architect Louis-Hippolyte Lebas built it in the neo-classical style, popular at that time, and the design was based on the ancient basilicas of Rome.
The name derives from lorettes, who were woman that lived in area and kept by wealthy men of the upper class.
I especially like the hand painted murals and the stunning inlaid ceilings.

Lovely pictures, Richard. Actually, the church is named after the shrine of Our Lady of Loreto in Italy, said to be the house in Nazareth where the Virgin Mary lived. Tradition has it that the house was miraculously moved to what is now Fiume in Italy in the 13th century, and thence to the village of Loreto. (The angels apparently got the location wrong the first time and moved it again within the village.) The girls who received their lovers in the neighborhood of the church were called "des lorettes." (Older women were called "des lionnes," lionesses.)
