After our incredible day in Petra we went back to the hotel to refuel for the night tour.
Two nights a week, they have a special opening of the park grounds. We met with a larger group of people by the entrance at about 7PM. It was a brisk night about 55 degrees Fahrenheit and the cooler air felt good after the relentless sunshine during the day. Since no cars are allowed in the area the air smelled clean and we could see the myriad of stars brilliantly sparkling.
The narrow sand pathway as far as the eye could see was lined with votive candles covered with brown paper bags. There was a half moon out that night that shone a special light on to us.
We arrived at the plaza where the Treasury building is and it spilled over with hundreds of candles and no other light. It took our breath away. A lone figure in the middle of the plaza played the flute, captivating the audience. After he played we walked back to the hotel transfixed by the stars, moonlight, and flickering candles.
A night to remember for many years to come.
I have also included more daytime photos.
The Jordanian Tourist Board generously provided our hotel, tour guide, and driver, which was invaluable in planning our Petra trip.
