Meredith ends the week of Christmas posts with some very special photos from Colmar in Eastern France.
A visit to Colmar during the holidays can turn you into a wide-eyed child before you know it. Disney would be jealous. The quaint Alsatian town is straight out of a storybook, with half-timbered houses, reflective canals, and a maze of Christmas huts made warm with sparkling lights and vatloads of vin chaud.
Everyone is friendly. Saint Nicholas is laughing and chatting (and drinking vin chaud). Neighbors are out in the markets visiting (and drinking vin chaud). Tourists are buying bagsful of artisanal crafts, holiday ornaments, and homebaked goodies (and drinking vin chaud).
The goats nuzzle you and lick your camera lens. (Full disclosure: I spent an hour patting the goats thinking they were reindeer. I'm blaming it on the vin chaud ... or on my unshakeable belief in Santa Claus, so strong that any animal that remotely looks like a reindeer becomes a reindeer.)
I loved watching the children of Colmar ... and becoming a child again myself. And for a few days in the cold of Alsace, I truly felt the spirit of Christmas.
Happy holidays.
