Coucou Bazar is the animated painting that was taken from the L’Hourloupe cycle by artist Jean Dubuffet and performed for the first time in 1973 at Guggenheim Museum in NYC. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary, Coucou Bazar is being presented for a short time at Les Arts Decoratifs.
I went on Sunday to see it and it was wondrous. The incredible scale and breadth of the figures filling the wide stage was incredible with Dubuffet’s bold reds blues outlined in black. As I was watching, a figure started to move and I realized there were people inside of some of the figures.
Two other versions of Coucou Bazar have been presented, one in Paris in 1974 at the Grand Palais and once again in Turin in 1978. The performance lasts an hour and Turkish musician Ilhan Mimaroglu composed the music.
The exhibition also has photos, costumes, and original posters.
Jean Dubuffet generously donated 160 of his works to the museum in 1973.
Hurry and see it soon, it’s only on till November 30.
