I cordially invite you to attend the opening of my partner Vincent’s new exhibition TABLETS on April 4 starting at 6PM at Galerie NEC, 20, rue Des Coutures Saint Gervais 75003. If you can’t make the opening, the show runs until May 11.
The full title of the exhibition is TABLETS (It was November; documentation 3). “It was November” references November 1984 when Vincent’s friend Don became the first person he knew to die of AIDS and changed his life forever, as many others he knew died over the years. Vincent’s hope is that the work leads to a place that makes us care deeply about what we’ve lost.
Below are some more personal notes from Vincent about the show.
“What you see is what you see”, a quote I came across from the artist Frank Stella steered me in the direction this work would take. I decided to eliminate all non-essential forms avoiding metaphorical associations, symbolism, and suggestions of spiritual transcendence. I reduced my materials to a set of unitary, geometric forms and a sparse set of materials— Bible paper, wood, ink and color—indigo, white and gold glitter. Bleeding through the ink and the Bible paper are traces of images from a series of microscopic cellular lab prints of the HIV virus. The absence of the unnecessary to reveal the inner qualities of the materials themselves is an effort to un-conceal the subject—fragility of memory. Fragility of loss.
A group of tablets is arranged as a series of triptychs sitting atop a raised structure of plywood running along the perimeter of the gallery. The arrangement emphasizes the architecture of the gallery inviting the viewer to be conscious of the space. The possibility is there for a more pure relationship between the viewer and the work and their own private considerations.
The work maturing over time and with a thoughtful and contemplative study on how I could express my relationship to such loss, led me back to a memory of loss and to my subject, the abstract quality of memory, something that is invisible.
