Collioure Week Part IV: Doors, Streets, and Sunset

I spent my last day in Collioure walking up and down the multi-leveled streets and passageways and all the nooks and crannies beyond them. I photographed the pastel painted fronts of houses, which in any other context would be garish, but somehow in Collioure they were charming and painter like. As usual I was obsessed with the doors and entranceways to the small houses as I madly clicked my camera. At the end of the day a stunning sunset took me by surprise and it was a breathtaking finale to my stay in Collioure.

Collioure Week Part 3: Perpignan

Perpignan is the nearest large city to Collioure and where I took the train to from Paris. We went to Perpignan one afternoon for lunch and to explore the city. It’s a sleepy, kind of run down place but there is an old part of the city that had some history. We roamed the almost empty, shaded narrow streets of the St. Jean area with architecture dating from the 1500s. Of course, I ducked into deserted courtyards as I do in Paris. The centerpiece of the quartier is Cathédrale de Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Perpignan, a Roman Catholic cathedral built in Catalan Gothic style, erected in 1324 by King Sancho of Majorca and completed in the 15th century.

Perpignan has a large North African population and we thought Moroccan food for lunch would be in order. Blair had tried before getting into a highly recommended Moroccan restaurant but it was closed the last time he was here. We found out it was open that day, so scurried right over.

Right away I could tell it was an authentic Moroccan restaurant and had the specific elements and feel of the ones I had eaten in Morocco. I have had some very good Moroccan food in Paris over the years but none have been extraordinary or recreated what I experienced in Morocco. The interior of the restaurant was so inviting and warm, we felt like spending the whole day there. On the walls were a series of captivating, illustrated Art Deco travel posters of Morocco, which were so romantic, I felt like hopping the next plane to Marrakesh.  We were the only customers, so we acted like we had the place to ourselves.

 

I ordered Pastilla, which is a traditional Moroccan dish of a crust of phyllo dough filled with pigeon, almonds, cinnamon, and raisins. It’s one of my favorite Moroccan dishes, a dreamy mix of sweet and savory, with the delectable phyllo dough surrounding it. Most restaurants serve a modified version with chicken, since pigeon is not high on the list of favorite foods of Western diners. This version had chicken and I have to say it was one of the best I have ever had. The outside phyllo, done to perfection, was crunchy and a bit buttery, and the inside was a mélange of juicy chicken, sweet raisins, and the tang of cinnamon. I can still taste it as I write this. Laurie and Blair had excellent lamb tagines. We spoke with the owner for a while and he was so hospitable, he made us feel like we were in his home

We didn’t want it to end but we had to leave since we had a date to meet some new friends in a small town about an hour a way.

Colliure Week Part 2: Anchovies, Food Market, and Cafe Templiers

Collioure prides itself in producing the best anchovies in the world. On my first afternoon in Collioure, Laurie and Blair said we had to get to the anchovy plant before 4PM so we could get a tour. Anchovies are a love hate thing and I am one of the lovers, so I was eager to learn how they were produced. On the backside of town was the factory above a modest retail shop. In the large open space, two young women happily but intensely filleted and then meticulously packed the anchovies into the jars. I watched in fascination as they placed the filleted anchovies by hand on sheets of white paper placing them in straight lines before they are packed in either water, oil, or vinegar. They also pride themselves on the fact that it is all done by hand with absolutely no machinery which makes one truly appreciate the process considering how automated everything in the world has become. Anchovy and tuna production was at its peak in 1870 when there were 140 boats and over 800 fisherman, but today it has dwindled to two manufacturers on the same street, Ets Roque, where I visited, and Ets Declaux. In the window of Declaux are the beautiful old sea blue tins.

The next morning we visited the twice-weekly market in the center of town. Filled with everything from Corsican clementines to a slipper bar setup up in a truck with warm, furry bedroom slippers to locally produced jams to a fabric bazaar to the abundant bunches of garlic, the market was the highlight of a sleepy January day. The back wall of the market square had colorful, Picasso-like mural.

After the market we went for a much-needed second coffee at the Cafe Templiers, a hotel and cafe with an artistic history. The cafe was the spot where all the artists of the day convened, from Raoul Dufy to Picasso. The walls are dotted with a smattering of the 2,000 plus paintings the original owners Rene and Pauline Pous collected and left to their son. All the rooms in the hotel  have paintings from the collection.

Colliure is also well known for its local full-bodied wine made of grenache and mourvedre grapes, having one of the smallest vineyards in France. It also grows grapes for the Banyuls sweet wine and aperitif.

Collioure Week Part 1

Many of you liked my Menton series so much, you asked me for more travel stories. I have fulfilled your wish with this new series of stories and photos from Collioure, a small seaside village in southwest France.

My painter friends Laurie and Blair rented a house in Collioure for the month of December and a few extra days in January and invited me to come on down. Never refusing a travel invite, I took them up on their offer and took the train down right after New Years.

It was a crisp sunny day when I arrived and the brilliant sunshine along with some warmth was most welcome after too many gray, chilled days in Paris. Collioure is near the Catalan region of Spain and Cadaques, where Salavador Dali lived most of his life, is 20 minutes away. You can see many Catalan touches in the architecture, food, and culture of Collioure. Collioure is pure charm and just as you would picture a romantic village in the south of France. Laurie and Blair's small house was located in the old part of the city, a two minute walk from the port where the Notre Dame des Anges church and the lighthouse bell tower.

In the early 1900s, Collioure was a haven for Fauvist painters including Andre Derain, Matisse, Georges Braques, and Picasso. There are 98 reproductions of Matisse's and Derain's works all over the village at the exact locations they were painted.

The origins of Collioure date from 673 when it was a trading port and in 981 the Count of Roussillon and the king of Majorca built a fortress as used it for their summer residence. It still stands today and was restored in 1945. In 1659 in became part of the French crown.

In the coming days I will share more about the magic of Collioure and the fun side trips we made. Stay tuned.

Fashion Week Fall 2012: Paco Rabanne

In a 360-degree turn from the Aganovich and Glenn Marten collections from my last two posts, Paco Rabanne is all about sexy, slinky, and sizzle. There was lots of skin and legs showing in this dazzling show at the Grand Palais.

The eponymous brand that was the rage of the swinging 60s and 70s with its chain mail link mini-dresses, Paco Rabanne is still taking its cue from that era. Updating it to be relevant for the woman of today without being too retro can be a tricky thing and the designer Mannish Arora for Paco Rabanne succeeds. This was a strong show with pulsating, techno music setting the theme. Although the cut of the dresses and coats was razor sharp, there was a slight softness to them and the models moved comfortably. Even the metal dresses and pieces had a flow to them and seemed lighter. To capture the essence of the brand, Arora went through the Paco Rabanne archives and used a image of French singer Francois Hardy from the 1970s to inspire him. White, black, gray, and metallic were the predominant colors but a flash of cobalt blue in some of the pieces midway in the show was a welcome refresher. Hemlines were mostly above the knee and the see through woven metal hems on the metal dresses gave them an added dash of sexiness without being too revealing.

The few cocktail dresses with the monkey hair adorning hems and necks were garish and the only pieces that didn't work well in this otherwise cohesive, almost flawless show.

Fashion Week Fall 2012: Glenn Martens

Glenn Martens, a graduate of the prestigious Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts,  launched his debut collection last week. He is a next generation talent coming on the heels of his predecessors Martin Margiela, Dries Van Noten, and Ann Demeulemeester, who made Belgian design from Antwerp a major force on the world fashion map in the early 90s.

Martens' collection is inspired by his hometown Bruges, and the city's Gothic architecture serves as the backdrop for his tweed skirts, wool trousers, and coats.

The show was more of an artistic presentation rather than a runaway show, taking place in a loft space in a obscure courtyard way in the back of a municipal building in the Marais. The room was dark and on the walls was a slide show of various modern paintings as the models walked by very slowly in almost robotic manner with slow, New Age instrumental music playing. The clothes took on an interesting dimension against the slide show and at the end the models posed against a still of an Oriental tapestry, looking like a modern day Dutch portrait, with their pale white complexions and statue-like stance.

The collection, like Aganovich yesterday, was long and mostly covered up with a mixture of long skirts and pants. There were a few looks that showed some skin like a silver sheath with slits starting from above the waist with a short black skirt underneath and a lovely white organza jacket just barely coverage the model's breasts. I can see an already distinct style from Glenn Martens and he is a smart, sensitive designer with a strong vision. However I think he needs to add a little more sexiness to the clothes or to the look of the show. It may have been the styling more than the clothes that contributed to the coldness of the overall look, with the models wearing white nurse-like shoes and their pale almost unmade-up faces, looking more like waif teenagers than women.

I wish Glenn Martens much success for the future and I will be very interested in seeing how his work progresses.

Fashion Week Fall 2012: Aganovich

It's Fall Fashion week 2012 and fashion designers are racing madly to put the finishing touches on their shows while fashion show attendees, groupies, fashion bloggers, buyers, and magazine editors are all scurrying breathlessly from one show to the next.

I met Brooke Taylor and Nana Aganovich, the founders of the label Aganovich, a few years ago and covered their first show here in 2010. I have been following them ever since and have always liked their thoughtful approach to their collections. This season the show was presented in a cavernous former car repair garage on rue du Turenne in the Marais.

The collection is inspired by illustrator Clifford Harper's arctic imagery of icebergs and avalanches and the color palate is black, white, and blue. The look was long and covered up and the models looked like they bracing for a cold winter in Scandinavia, with their zippered high necks and wool helmut hats.
 There was a nice subtlety in the tone on tone white fabrics of wool and felt, along with black wool and charmeuse.

Many of the styles had a modern day monk or priest like quality to them and long, flowing, robe-like dresses looked like chic gospel robes.  The vanilla cable knit zippered poncho with the low armholes was a delicious cocoon any woman would love to snuggle up in the depths of a chilly day.

Aganovich has always had a distinct viewpoint and they have evolved this season with a collection of smart, non-trendy, non-conformist clothes.

Berenice Abbott
The Jeu de Paume presents the first ever show covering the entire career of American urban photographer Berenice Abbott. The expansive exhibit shows her early Paris portraits of avant garde artists and writers including Eugène Atget, Marcel Duchamp, James Joyce, Man Ray, Jean Cocteau, Sylvia Beach, André Gide, Foujita, and Max Ernst. Her well known black and white cityscape photos of New York are also shown.

New! Eye Prefer Paris Cooking Classes
I am happy to announce the launch of Eye Prefer Paris Cooking Classes. Come take an ethnic culinary journey with me and chef and caterer Charlotte Puckette, co-author of the bestseller The Ethnic Paris Cookbook (with Olivia Kiang-Snaije). First we will shop at a Paris green-market for the freshest ingredients and then return to Charlotteís professional kitchen near the Eiffel Tower to cook a three-course lunch. After, we will indulge in the delicious feast we prepared along with hand-selected wines.

Cost: 185 euros per person (about $240)
Time: 9:30AM- 2PM (approximately 4 1/2 hours)
Location: We will meet by a metro station close to the market
Class days: Tuesday,Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
Minimum of 2 students, maximum 6 students.
