As I mentioned on Monday's post, Jilly Bennett was kind enough to drive me up to the medieval village of Gorbio. About 7 kilometers from Menton and 360 meters above, Gorbio sits in the shadow Mont Agel, the Gorbio peak, and the Madone pass.
The narrow, mysterious passageways lead you to festive painted doors and lushly planted and ivy and covered homes, some made of corroded stone. The town square has a fountain from 1902 which originally was for horses and mules. A lone elm tree from 1713 is engraved in ancient Italian. According to local folklore, the tree was planted at the time of the Utrecht treaty. Certain parts of Gorbio date back to the 1200s and the La Chapelle des Penitents Blancs de Gorbio was constructed in 1445.
Once again, there were views that looked all the way to the sea which took my breath away.
