These are the second set of photos in Vézelay I shot when I spent New Years near there earlier this year. It was a cold, misty day on this hilltop village with much of the architecture dating from the 1200s. In some ways it was more like England, a romantic scene out of Wuthering Heights in the gray mist. But for sure it was France with the Vézelay Abbey which was built in the 11th century and according to legend, houses the bones of Mary Magdalene. IIn 1058 the Pope confirmed the genuineness of the relics, leading to an influx of pilgrims that has continued to this day. The Abbey was also a major starting point for pilgrims on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela, one of the most important of all medieval pilgrimage centers.
Prints of these photos are for sale. If you would like to purchase one, please email me at [email protected] for sizes, prices, etc.

Very moody pictures, and, except for the TABAC sign, you could be back in the 1200s.
