Just when you think a carnaval can’t get any better … it does. The Gambetta Mardi Gras festival raises the bar every year. (I guess it’s really a Dimanche Gras , since it’s on a Sunday … doesn’t quite have the poetic ring though). Last year’s parade boasted the hooded monk marching band, a moving pyramid of gymnasts, and hundreds of innocent, wide-eyed, tiara-ed and confetti-haired parade goers. How to top that? Bring in the dancing apes, flamenco flurries, and children caged in spokes of metal flower petals (dressed up as Les Ronde des Fleurs, which was the parade theme).
Most notably, however, the wide-eyed innocence of last year’s young people seems to have become the wisdom of ages. There was no escape from the depth of their stares. I don’t know what this confidence, this haunting worldliness, means, but it gave me hope and made me shiver at the same time.
