It was a curious convergence. Carnivale, Chinese New Year, and Saint Valentine's all fell on the same day … and a Sunday at that. What’s a soul to do but celebrate? From the guinguette at the Mouffetard market to the Belleville carnivale parade, everyone was out. As I wandered from celebration to celebration, I was artfully reminded that Paris is much more than costumed parades, waltzing dancers, and undulating dragons. It is a collection of striking faces. Ordinary and extraordinary people just being themselves … in that timeless Paris way.
I may or may not see these faces again, but on this day … at this moment … I was connected to each and every one of these people. And I’m glad that even in the gray winter light (and, yes, even in black and white photographs), there is still so much color in the world.
