While researching my Door of the Month this month by Lalique I discovered the pretty square Place de la Reine Astrid. I love the statue with the women strongly holding hands, as if maybe making a pact, while the naked children underneath look at their mother for guidance. Also notice the white kale plants in front of them. I researched the internet thoroughly to find out any information about this square but couldn't find anything. The only thing I read that was related was that the Cour Albert where it is located was formally called the Cours la Reine before 1918. If anybody knows more information about Place de La Reine Astrid, please put it in the comments section. I did read that Queen Astrid was a famous Swedish queen who tragically died in a car accident at the age of 29 in 1935.

Queen Astrid was swedish, but immensely more famous for being the Queen of the Belgians, King Leopold III's wife, very admired and loved by her people!
Her tragic death has still increased the myth...

This is France and Belgium making it up after a war in the early 19th century, promising never to fight one another again.
It’s actually written on the bottom of the monument if you push aside the foliage.

So what exactly does it say on the monument? I could make out Belgium (in French) and 1914-1918. Seems world war one related.

hi mike,
I haven't been back to the monument since I photographed it , so I can't answer your question. Next time I see it, I will let you know.
