Here's an unexpected treat: A second Door of the Month.
I pass this magnificent door with the tongue sticking out all the time on my Marais tours and always forget to feature it. Finally the timing is perfect because the the Hotel des Ambassadeurs de Hollande (hotel means a private residence or mansion) built in the late 1650s, was put up for sale last week for for 35 million euros. It is one of the finest examples of the historical opulent mansions that were built all over the Marais for the royals and aristocrats from about the mid-1500s to 1700. Built for the Amelot family, it was originally known as the Hotel Amelot Bisseuil. In 1951, Paul -Louis Weiller, a wealthy industrialist and financier, bought and restored it. He died in 1993 and his son Paul-Annick continued the restoration but died in 1998 and the heirs have now put it up for sale. The house measures 1,713-square-meters, or 18,440-square-foot, house, with a 270-square-meter basement, 313 square meters of courtyard space and a 45-square-meter terrace; 15 parking spaces in an adjacent building; and a 794-square-meter apartment building nearby. You can do some serious entertaining in this baby.
Last week was quite a week for mansion selling. On another note, Candy Spelling, the widow of mega wealthy schlock-master TV producer Aaron Spelling (Dynasty, Fantasy Island, The Love Boat, Charlie's Angels,Beverly Hills 90210, all of your guilty pleasure shows from the 80s & 90s) has put her Holmby Hills, California mansion The Manor up for sale for 150 million dollars. The faux French style chateau set on 4.7 acres, at one time was the largest single house in the U.S. (56,500 square feet) and features a china room, wine tasting room, gift wrapping room, screening room, bowling alley, a barber shop and beauty salon, somewhere between 16 & 26 bathrooms, tennis court, waterfalls, reflection pool, 18th century-style garden and citrus orchard. Maybe Candy should downsize to the Hôtel des Ambassadeurs de Hollande.
