I discovered this cool, refreshing fountain just in time on a hot, humid day last month. The Fontaine des Quatre Parties du Monde (Fountain of the Four Parts of the World), at the end of the Marco Polo Garden just behind southern part of the Jardin du Luxembourg, was designed by Gabriel Davidoud between 1867 & 1874. The centerpiece is four bronze female statues portraying the continents of the world, created by Jean Baptiste Carpreaux. Europe is represented by the figure of a white woman, Africa by a black woman, America by an American Indian and Asia by a Chinese woman. There are also eight figures of dolphins, horses and tortoises made by Emmanuel Fremiet.
Don’t you just want to jump in?
