The French government is challenging part of the old adage “You can never be too rich or too thin”.
In an attempt to crack down on anorexia, French lawmakers are looking to punish websites that encourage and advise anorexics on how to starve. (One tells you how to survive on literally an apple a day). Recommending fines of up to 45,000 euros and three-year prison sentences for offenders who encourage “extreme thinness”(what the hell does that mean? Talk about vague. Or maybe Vogue), the French government is serious about promoting healthy body images of women. The bill would make it illegal to "provoke a person to seek excessive weight loss by encouraging prolonged nutritional deprivation that would have the effect of exposing them to risk of death or directly compromise health." There has been a worldwide movement to curb images of too thin women after Brazilian model Nan Carolina Reston died of anorexia related causes in 2006. If the law were passed it would be the strongest of its kind anywhere in the world.
The good news is now when you visit France, you don’t have to feel guilty about having too much rich food or pastries.
Now that too thin is against the law, I can concentrate on the never too rich part of the adage. Please book your tour today or send me money (euros, please!) so I can keep up.

I think that going after websites that promote anorexic behavior is a good thing.
There has been a consistent trend in Euro models towards anorexia for both men and women. When 6 foot plus MALE models are expected to weigh about 145 pounds in order to be hired for the Paris runway shows, that is just sick.
I've blogged about it here.
