I am back from my blogging siesta and in the Paris fold again.

It’s April in Paris and although the weather is still iffy, there was a burst of spring the other day in the lovely park surrounding Notre Dame and on the Ile St. Louis. Flowers were showing off their brilliant colors, trees were blossoming their abundant blossoms, and love was in the air.

Best of EPP:Christian Lacroix, Histoires de Mode

I'm taking a blogging siesta for a few weeks and posting some of my favorite and your favorite former posts. Enjoy, and will have all new posts starting again on Monday, April 14.

I am a pushover for costume exhibits and Christian Lacroix’s Histoires de Mode nearly knocked me to the ground. Give me some flounces, frills and feathers and I am a happy camper. Lacroix provided them in spades.

The new show at the Musee de Decoratifs is one of the best I’ve seen in years. The museum in the past few seasons has had some innovative, clever costume shows including the Jean Paul Gaultier/Regine Chopinot: Le DéFilé and Balenciaga Paris shows, but thanks to Lacroix, it has surpassed itself by light years with this eye popping visual orgy of color, pattern, and exquisite craftsmanship.

Consisting of 30 vitrines on 2 floors, the timeline is from the late 1800’s till the present. The almost overwhelming exhibit starts with the basics, the first 2 vitrines only showing white clothes on hangers on a simple rolling rack. Then the carnival of color and texture starts in the following room with a series of categories with names of patchwork, historique, noir, lame, fleurs coloeurs, texture, and mixages and each one was fantastically showing off it’s name. The usual suspect designers including Givenchy, Paco Rabanne, Yves St. Laurent, Chanel, Vionnet, Dior, Pierre Cardin, Balenciaga, Lanvin, Gres, Martin Mangiela, and many more too numerous to mention, were well represented.

The cherry on the cake of the exhibit was 3 of Lacroix’s creations in front of each vitrine, thus still giving him a much deserved retrospective of his master works and showing his genius. I tried singling out some favorites/standouts but it was like trying to pick your favorite color M&M.


Lacroix himself was there giving interviews, surprisingly dressed in a dark jacket and jeans, as I was expecting him to dress as flamboyantly as his creations.

In addition to being one of the most brilliant designers and couturiers of our time, Lacroix can now add great curator to his resume.

Best of EPP: L’entrecote

With all the insider places I write about, there are still many obvious popular Paris places I’ve never been (don’t be shocked): Invalides, St. Chapelle, Fontainebleau and L’entrecote.

L’entrecote has been on my list for years, and after many failed attempts to get in without waiting on line for 2 hours because of the no reservation policy, the other night I lucked out. A friend of mine called at the last minute to have dinner and I suggested L’entrecote, still being naïve enough there would be no line. I arrived 30 minutes later, and miracle of miracles, we were seated immediately.

We chose the St. Germain de Pres location, (there’s a second one in the 8th arr. near the Champs Elysee) with a typical, pleasant bistro atmosphere of French posters and dark red leather banquettes.

There’s only one dish on the menu: steak frites with a simple green salad. I suppose you’re wondering what’s the big deal, since one can get steak frites at any corner bistro. True, but what makes L’entrecote special is the secret sauce that tops the steak. A tangy mustardy, béarnaise-like mysterious sauce, it was scrumptious and gave the steak a whole other taste dimension.

Served already sliced, the meat was tender and juicy, and the frites, were the perfect temperature and crispness. One drawback was delightfully corrected immediately: the portion seemed small but I was told you could have as may refills as you like. This was music my glutton’s ear, and I, of course, had seconds. The prices were right: 22 euros for my plat, 16 euros for a bottle of the house red wine, and 4.20 euros for 1 liter of Vittel water. Stuffed and satisfied, we walked out spending 30 euros a person.

Beware: Much like Rays pizza in New York, there are many imposters saying they are the “original” entrecote. Don’t believe them: stick to the one and only locations listed below.

Best of EPP: La Vaissellerie

La Vaissellerie is one of my favorite neighborhood shops and one of the most popular stops on my Eye Prefer Paris tours. It’s a china and house wares emporium filled to the brim with a fantastic selection of glasses, mugs, dishes, flatware, napkin rings, teapots, snail forks, and anything imaginable for the home. Every nook and cranny is filled with some clever and delightful item you can’t resist.

Outside is the bargain bin with café au lait bowls and colored glasses all under 3 euros and waist high stacks of plates, bowls, cups, and saucers in every shape & size greet you in the entrance. I outfitted my entire kitchen when I moved here for under 200 euros, which included some good quality white restaurant plates for only 2 euros each. And with the shrinking dollar against the euro, this is a store you can go a little crazy in and not get sticker shock when you receive your credit card statement. They have many wonderful small gifty objets for under 5 euros and if you are visiting Paris in December, it’s a great place to do some Christmas shopping.

The staff is helpful and they ask every customer if there purchases are gifts, and prettily wrap them for free. They are also thoughtful enough to tightly wrap your items if you tell then you are traveling. My favorite staff member is Roman, the cute French guy with dreadlocks who was getting down to reggae music while wrapping my client’s gifts.

Some of my favorite items are the wooden baguette with a hidden bread knife, Provencal ceramic olive bowls, over 15 patterns of demi tasse spoons, salt & pepper shakers with hugging figures, cookie tins with bold graphics, and my favorite of all, single serving mini le Creuset-style pots in ocean blue, lemon yellow, and pale green.

They even sell large vinyl shopping bags with scenes of Paris in case you go overboard with your fabulous finds and have no room in your suitcase.

Best of EPP:Ten Insider Tips for Paris Museums & Monuments

Visiting Paris museums and monuments are the things you most want to do here. However, they can be crowded, overwhelming, and expensive. Here are 10 insider tips to make it smooth,efficient, and sometimes cheaper.

1. Go at Night
Some of the larger museums are open at night.
• The Louvre- Wednesday & Friday till 10PM( but they start chasing you out by 9:30PM)
• D’Orsay- Thursday till 9:45
• Quai de Branly- Thursday till 9:30PM
• Palais de Tokio- 11:30PM every night except Monday

2. Go Early
The Louvre opens at 9AM, so be an early bird and catch the Mona Lisa first

3. Buy Advance Tickets or a Museum Pass
You can buy advanced tickets in person or on the internet for most museums, monuments, and exhibits at Fnac

Museum Pass-If you plan on going to at least 2 museums a day, than a pass is a no-brainer and you cut through the lines.
Passes are good at over 50 museums & monuments in Paris & surrounding areas.
2 day Pass- 30 euros
4 Day Pass-45 euros
6 day Pass-60 euros

4.Fast Louvre Tickets
Inside the Carrousel de Louvre (the shopping mall in the Louvre) there is a Tabac that sells tickets.Closed on Tuesdays.

5.Metro Stop for the Louvre
The metro stop is Palais Royal-Musee de Louvre off the 1 & 9 lines, not the Louvre-Rivoli stop.

6.Free Admission
Many Paris museums are free on the first Sunday of the month. Click here for the list.

7. Small Museums with Free Admission

8.Fastest Entry to Eiffel Tower
The fastest way to get into the Eiffel Tower and bypass the lines, is to make reservations at Altitude 95 restaurant on the first floor.
Instructions
• Call Altitude 95 @ 01 45 55 20 04 and make reservations as far in advance as possible .Ask for window seats. Average price per meal :50 euros per person.
• When you arrive, go to kiosk on the left between the legs of the tower, when you are facing the front.

9. Guided Tours of Louvre, D’Orsay, & Versailles
The most informative and efficient way to see The Louvre, D’Orsay, & Versailles is to go on a private or group tour.

Group Tours Given by the Museum
Louvre- Tours are in English and last 90 minutes.
Times: 11AM, 2PM, & 3:45PM everyday except Sundays & Tuesdays.
Cost: 5 euros in addition to entry fee.

Musee D’Orsay- Tours are in English and last 90 minutes.
Times: 11:30AM &2:30PM everyday except Monday.
Cost: 7.50 euros in addition to entry fee.

Versailles- Tours of private rooms are in English and last 90 minutes.
Times: 11AM, 1PM, 2PM, & 3:45PM everyday.
Cost: 7.50 euros in addition to entry fee.

I highly advise tours with a private guide and can recommend some excellent, very experienced ones. Email me and I will send you their information.

10. Best View of Paris-Bell Tower at Notre Dame
Climb 250 steps up the bell tower and see where Quasimodo rang those bells. Most experts and historians say this is the best view of Paris, showing mostly the older part of the city.

I have to say it was a very tough choice, because many of the photos were so terrific and the stories behind them witty, interesting and inspiring. In fact, it was so hard picking just one winner, I decided to pick two. Penguin books was kind enough to provide two copies of Vicki Archer’s My French Life. I have also posted the runners-up. Congratulations to the winners, and please send me your addresses so I can have the book sent to you.

The first prize goes to Kevin from northern California. I met Kevin briefly in September at a shop during one of my Eye Prefer Paris tours, and we have become email buddies ever since. This stunning photo was taken from the D’Orsay Museum.

The wonderful art juxtaposed with the great light-filled architectural space of the Musée D’Orsay makes it one of my favorite museums. Being a collector of old watch mechanisms and parts, I have always loved the expansive clock as the backdrop of the cafe in the D'Orsay. As I admired the clock during my most recent trip, I looked beyond its beautiful geometric forms through the window behind it.There stood Sacre Coeur perfectly framed in the sunny distance. I stood there amidst the bustling crowd and admired the perfect view. It's little surprises like these that make exploring Paris so enjoyable. Whether walking and winding my way through unknown streets admiring the wonderful architecture and gardens, or staring through patisserie windows at tarts and pastries that look too good to eat, or visiting my favorite museum all over again, it's the little surprises and discoveries like this new view of Sacre Coeur that make a place special.

The second first prize goes to Norman from Boston and he was kind enough to send three fantastic photos.

We had just finished lunch at Le Grand Filles et Fils, a cute little wine bar/shop in the Galerie complete with entertainment. Very funny high jinx at the bar really...this older French business man (on a 2 hour 6 glasses of wine lunch) was very busy trying to charm these two blonde Canadian tourists back to the houseboat they were renting on the Seine to have an afternoon of let's just say sailing! They were busy flirting with a very handsome man sitting across from us who wanted nothing to do with them. I think he did get his sailing license that afternoon. Here is another of my favorites I took in the courtyard of the Palais Royal after the most amazing "over the top" 4-hour lunch I have ever had with my friends at Le Grand Vefour. What a fabulous time! Perfect food, wine, Champagne and service.

A very special Eiffel Tower view from Billy of Succasunna, New Jersey.

I expected a walk up the Eiffel Tower’s stairs would reveal many spectacular views of Paris, and indeed, it did. Unanticipated were brief, yet pleasant encounters with people from many other parts of the globe. I left with the impression that my visit to the Eiffel Tower was also a short trip to the rest of the world.

Julie from St. Remy de Provence sent this photo of a poppy-drenched field.

Every spring, this field on the route between the villages of St. Remy and Noves bursts into flaming color. Everyone loves to drive to Avignon this way (rather than the "normal" way) because of this field, with the Alpilles Mountains in the background The road on either side is often dotted with parked cars: people stopping to enjoy the view or photograph it. Then as quickly as they've arrived, the poppies disappear and the field goes back to ho-hum green/gold.

Mary from Cincinnati, Ohio, perfectly captures two favorite Paris passions: dogs & scooters.

One of my favorite things about Paris are the pets - and as you know - the Parisians adore their pets and take them everywhere. There are photo ops in every quartier: at the Sunday Bird Market on Ile St. Louis, in the pet stores along Quai Mégisserie, on the Métro, in the parks, in the restaurants...you get the idea. Along Canal St. Martin, I saw a bunny in the pocket of a pre-schooler - who was riding a tricycle and holding a paper parasol. At Le Bon Marché I snapped a black Lab lounging in front of Prada brassieres...but imagine my delight when I stepped out of a store on rue de Rivoli and saw this fashion plate!

I have a confession to make: I have purposely withheld sharing my favorite Marais café with you.

The already popular Le Loir dans La Theiere has hands-down some of the best home made desserts in Paris. I’m not talking about fussy French pastries- I’m talking down-home warm apple crumble, peach clafouti, fresh fig tart, rosemary & peach tart, and the tallest lemon meringue pie (you have to turn it on its side to eat it) this side or on any other side of the Atlantic.

Going backwards, the rest of the menu selections are excellent and their hearty savory tarts are their other specialty. Yesterday’s selection was onion & tomato, zucchini & Chevre, eggplant & tomato, and fresh Chevre and capers. The large slice is served with a light green salad and the crusty crust with the creamy vegetable fillings make it a perfect prelude to dessert. Some other menu choices include large fluffy omelettes, club sandwich and classic French lentil salad.

The dark, cozy interior looks like a flea market with a mish-mosh of beat-up tan leather club chairs, old-fashioned school chairs with attached desks and your grandmother’s quaint couch. The walls are filled with dance and theatre posters, abstract paintings, and amusing Alice in Wonderland murals.

They offer a special brunch menu on the weekends but go before 12PM to avoid the lines spilling out the door. Afternoon tea is served from 4-7PM and the 9.50-euro price includes a pot of tea and dessert.

I am sorry that I have withheld this place till now, but if I go there and they run out of my favorite dessert, I will blame you.

I have to say it was a very tough choice, because many of the photos were so terrific and the stories behind them witty, interesting and inspiring.
