I was invited to an opening of a new fashion shoe boutique Cindy Glass in the Marais last night. Being a shoe fanatic and having had an extensive career in the shoe business including stints in a family shoe business and selling high-ticket lady’s shoes in the Delman salon at Bergdorf Goodman, I had to go.
The shoe designer, Lebanese born Laya Rahman, was charming and looked uber chic in a black jersey dress & cobalt blue tights. She showed off her gorgeous gams with a pair of black high-heeled sandals with oversized pink bows. I asked her the connection between the name Cindy Glass and her name, and she said Cindy Glass was short for Cinderella’s glass slipper. Duh! She had studied at Parsons School of Design and had been a filmmaker, photographer, & product designer before turning to shoes. The fact that they are made in Beirut ups their exotic quotient.
This season’s collection is titled Back to School and the shoes are playful & colorful with clever details. Medium-heeled simple pumps had small painted decals of hearts & pin-up girls, a Mary-Jane with a wide elastic band was covered with bright wool plaid, and a tall boot in cornflower blue vinyl bursted with white polka dots. The piece–de–resistance was the thick wool knitted sock boot on a high wooden platform.
The shop was festively and amusingly decorated with blackboards with descriptions and prices of the shoes- 190-230 euros- and penny candy strewn around the display shelves. On the back wall is a sign with bold white lettering saying FEELGOOD –FOOT MASSAGE and on the weekends they offer 10-minute foot massages.
The final touch was the little pumps made out of milk and dark chocolate. The perfect match of my two favorite things: chocolate and shoes.
