Trying to beat the heat by hanging out in my air-conditioned bedroom. I cope with the rest of un-air-conditioned Paris while showing my visiting NY friends the literal hot spots of Paris. I love showing friends and visitors my favorite Paris spots, everything from great museums to silly street posters. I’m thinking of branching out and doing private I Prefer Paris tours.
Speaking of great museums, I took my friend to the fabulous Marmottan Museum. Set at the edge of a quiet, green park in the 16th Arr., the Marmottan has the world’s largest collection of Monet paintings. Housed in this gem of a 19th century private house once owned by Paul Marmottan, the Monet’s were astounding, breathtaking, and overwhelmingly beautiful. We sat silent with our mouths agape on a bench marveling at the curved wall of the water lilies.
Afterwards we window shopped on designer boutique lined Ave. Montaigne, walked through the cool, tree lined Champs Elysee Park, and cooled off for a few minutes while we checked out the lobby of The Crillon Hotel. I looked like a typical mid-west American tourist dressed in shorts, Gap T-shirt, and sneakers and was surprised they even let me in. So much for French snobbism.
We then strolled over to Marche St. Honore, a wonderful oasis of outdoor cafes on a quiet pedestrian only square behind rue St. Honore. We settled in at this fun place with a quirky menu where I had this unusual, very tasty dish that was an apple crumble with foie gras. I came home and parked my self in my deliciously cool bedroom and watched 5 episodes of “The Sopranos” from last season.
An update on an item from my Bastille Day posting: the reason why people shrugged their shoulders when I wished them Happy Bastille Day was because you are supposed to say “Happy July 14”.
