Lately I’ve realized there are many classic monuments and sites in Paris I’ve never taken proper photos of. Many of them I saw when I first arrived in 2005 and have either not visited since or visited with photographing them in mind.
I was having lunch with a friend last week near Invalides and decided to visit the Chapel at Invalides where Napoleon is buried. The first thing that caught my eye was the majestic gold encased dome (still one of the tallest structures in Paris at 350 feet high) against the partial blue sky.
Once inside looking up at the domed ceilings I was stunned by the beauty of the hand painted frescoes by Charles de La Fosse a student of Charles LeBrun. After looking up, I naturally looked down to see Napoleon’s tomb, which is strikingly displayed below a large circular cutout on the first floor.
In 1840 King Louis-Philippe ordered Napoleon’s coffin and remains to be moved to Paris. Architect Louis Visconti was commissioned to excavate a space in the Chapel at Invalides to build Napoleon’s tomb, which was completed in 1861. His remains are contained in a sarcophagus and protected by six concentric coffins, built from different materials, including mahogany, ebony, and oak. The outside is made of red porphyry and rests on a green granite base, circled by a crown of laurels with inscriptions, which are reminders of the empires great victories.
Open everyday 10AM-6PM till October, after Nov. 1 10AM-1PM
